The BC Marburg is a basketball -Verein from Marburg , the date with the sponsor name BC Pharmaserv Marburg competes firmierend in the German top flight. It is one of the largest basketball clubs in Hesse. BC Marburg is the longest-serving club in Germany's top division, the DBBL. In the 2002/03 season, the team celebrated their greatest club success by winning the German Championship and the German Cup .

Foundation of an association

According to the register of associations, the association was founded in 1996 and entered into the register of associations on March 11, 1997. On the club's website, it was founded in 1997. According to the founding minutes, the first chairman was Monja Rother, the second chairman was Aleksandra Kojić and treasurer Uwe Scheidemann .

The previous team played from 1992 to the 1995/96 season as the basketball department of VfL 1860 Marburg and from the 1996/97 season as VfL uniVersa Marburg in the 1st women's basketball division (DBBL). In 1995 there were differences between the main club VfL 1860 Marburg and the basketball department. Uwe Scheidemann, the trainer and manager of the Bundesliga team, then founded the Basketball Promotion Scheidemann GmbH , of which he was the managing director. This GmbH took over all rights and obligations for the Bundesliga team, released VfL 1860 Marburg from claims by third parties against the Bundesliga team and agreed on a cooperation with the main club. This cooperation was contractually extended by one year in 1996 after renewed quarrels, with the option for basketball promotion Scheidemann GmbH for a further year, provided it did not violate any contractual points. However, the basketball promotion Scheidemann GmbH withdrew its option to extend the contract and Scheidemann announced in March 1997 that the Bundesliga team VfL Universa Marburg was separating from the main club and was going to basketball as an independent club BC Marburg from the 1997/1998 season. From the 1997/1998 season onwards, the Bundesliga team appeared as BC Marburg, which Scheidemann had co-initiated in 1996.

Name Sponsors

From 1997 to 2004 the uniVersa Versicherung was the official name sponsor of BC Marburg, which played as BC uniVersa Marburg during this time . In November 2006, a new name sponsor could be won with the local company pharmaserv . Since then, the official name of the first division team has been BC Pharmaserv Marburg .

Additions to names

From 1997 to 2004 the club started with the addition of Marlins to its name . Since the 2004/05 season, the name suffix has been Blue Dolphins .

Trainer

The club's co-founder Uwe Scheidemann was the club's trainer and manager until 2004. He was also the managing director of Basketball Promotion Scheidemann GmbH , which was responsible for the finances of the Bundesliga team and held the Bundesliga rights. In January 2004 Scheidemann announced that the Bundesliga operations were at risk due to financial problems. In May 2004 the club terminated the contract with the marketing company Basketball Promotion Scheidemann GmbH . The basketball promotion Scheidemann GmbH litigated unsuccessfully against BC Marburg and Scheidemann was excluded from the club by a board resolution on August 17, 2006. On December 13, 2006 the Oberhessische Presse reported that the general assembly of the association confirmed Scheidemann's exclusion for behavior that was harmful to the association and justified it as follows: " Since the termination of the contract with the Basket Promotion GmbH founded by Scheidemann by BC Marburg in 2004 Scheidemann covered the association and one member with seven legal actions. He has now lost five lawsuits and two proceedings have not yet been completed. Despite the defeats in court, the ex-trainer was not responsible for the legal costs or the court costs, which now burdened the BC financially. "

Scheidemann's successor as trainer was Hans Brauer . Brauer ended his engagement after a year. For the 2005/2006 season, the club signed Aleksandra Kojić as a new coach. In January 2013, the club parted ways with coach Aleksandra Kojić during the current season. The previous assistant coach Frank Arnold was released from his position as assistant coach, but continued to coach the regional league team and youth teams. The type of separation from Aleksandra Kojić met with incomprehension among the press and fans.

The previous youth coach Patrick Unger inherited Aleksandra Kojić as head coach. From 2014 until the end of the 2018/2019 season, the Berlin-born Andreas Steinbach worked as an assistant trainer, from the 2019/2020 season Frank Arnold held the position. Unger was appointed national coach of the German women's basketball team in September 2018. In January 2020, Patrick Unger announced that he would not extend his expiring contract in Marburg. In April 2020, the American Dana Beszczynski was introduced as the new head coach.

Teams

BC Marburg consists of four women's and four men's teams. In addition to the Bundesliga women’s team, the women’s teams play in the Regionalliga Südwest, the third highest league, the regional league and the district league. The men's teams compete in the Oberliga, Landesliga and Kreisligen. In addition, the BC has various youth teams in the age groups U8 to U18, each with a performance-oriented and a sports-oriented team. The club also has a handicap group.

Team Mittelhessen

Selected Marburg U17 players play in the Mittelhessen team , the joint team of BC and Bender Baskets Grünberg , in the female youth basketball league (WNBL). In the very first season (2009/10) the team was German runner-up under coach Birte Schaake . Jenny Unger was the team's head coach from 2011 to 2014 , while the assistant coaches were Jennifer Münnich *, Birte Schaake and Marlena Schön . In 2014, the team under head coach Jenny Unger and the assistant coaches Birte Schaake and Marlena Schön again won the German runner-up. In August 2014 Aleksandra Kojić took over the Central Hesse team. In 2019, the collaboration with BC Marburg was ended. Since then, the Central Hesse team has been playing with players from Grünberg, Butzbach and Frankfurt.

Junior Dolphins Marburg

Since the 2019/2020 season, BC Marburg has been playing with the "Junior Dolphins Marburg" in the U18 Bundesliga WNBL .

Venue

The BC women usually play the Bundesliga games in the small sports hall at the Georg-Gaßmann-Stadion . Other sports halls in Marburg also serve as training and play venues for other teams in the club: the former Jägerkaserne in Frankfurter Straße, the sports hall of the Philippinum grammar school and the sports hall of the commercial schools at the Georg-Gaßmann-Stadion.
