The BMW F 800 is a range of motorcycles from the vehicle manufacturer BMW-Motorrad . The motorcycles have an in-line two-cylinder engine with a displacement of 798 cm³ manufactured by Rotax. The F 850 GS model, which was launched on the market at the end of 2018, has a two-cylinder engine designed by BMW and manufactured by BMW's cooperation partner BMW's cooperation partner Loncin in China.

Model variants

The motorcycles are or were offered in the following variants:

  • F 800 S Sportler - A half-faired sporty motorcycle. In 2006 it was the first model of the F-800 series, equipped with a light metal bridge frame (in this design the motor is the load-bearing element), single-sided swing arm and belt drive. Production of the F 800 S was discontinued in 2010.
  • F 800 ST - largely identical to the F 800 S, but has full fairing, a higher handlebar that is more suitable for touring, a higher disc, different tires, a luggage rack and a more comfortable seat (2006–2012)
  • F 800 GS - travel enduro with tubular space frame , upside-down fork and chain drive (since 2008)
  • F 800 R - Naked bike with bridge frame and chain drive (since 2009) from 2017 model upgrade, including more power, meets the EU-4 standard.
  • F 800 GT - successor model of the ST, the sports tourer offers a slightly higher level of comfort and performance, but has otherwise only been changed minimally. (since 2012) A completely redeveloped cladding clearly distinguishes the GT from its predecessor ST. from 2017 model upgrade, including more standard equipment, meets the EU-4 standard.
  • F 800 GS Adventure - travel enduro with extended equipment compared to the F 800 GS (since 2013)

The series closed the gap in the BMW motorcycle program between the single-cylinder entry-level models of the F 650 series produced up to 2008 and the large R and K series. Since 2008, the F 650 GS and F 700 GS have been fitted with a power-reduced version of the two-cylinder engine that is also used in the F-800 series. The secondary drive for the F 800 S, ST and GT consists of a toothed belt drive or an O-ring chain for the F 800 R and GS models. All models have jerk damping in the secondary drive. The arrangement of the tank under the seat bench is also the same on all motorcycles in the series until around mid-2018.

The series has a water-cooled parallel twin (two-cylinder in-line engine) with a displacement of 798 cm³, developed jointly with Rotax . As a novelty in engine construction, this has a compensating connecting rod between the cylinders, which sits on its own crank pin with a 180 ° stroke offset to the pistons. The compensating rod guides a swing arm which is arranged horizontally under the gearbox. The crankshaft has four bearings. This ensures that the engine runs particularly smoothly. The four valves per cylinder are controlled by two overhead camshafts. The engine noise resembles that of the boxer engines due to the even ignition offset of 360 °. The engine is equipped with an injection system and a regulated three-way catalytic converter . The engine develops 63 kW (85 PS) at 7500 or 8000 rpm ( GS or S / ST ). Its maximum torque of 83 to 86 Nm is reached at around 5750 rpm.

Balance shafts are used in the two-cylinder engine that is manufactured by BMW's cooperation partner Loncin in China .
