Castelculier ( Occitan : Castelculhèr ) is a French municipality with 2,375 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Castelculier is located in the Agen arrondissement and belongs to the canton of Le Sud-Est Agenais . The inhabitants are called Castelfondais (es) .

geography

Castelculier is about six kilometers southeast of Agen north of the Garonne . The Séoune flows through the municipality and limits it to the east. Castelculier is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bon-Encontre in the north and west, Saint-Caprais-de-Lerm in the northeast, Saint-Pierre-de-Clairac in the east and Lafox in the south.

The former route nationale 113 (today's D813) runs through the municipality .

history

Archaeological excavations have revealed the villa of Lamarque from the Gallo-Roman era. The place must have already existed as a settlement in the 2nd century. Other building remains are known from the fourth century. Today the place is called Villascopia . During the Ancien Régime, the castle of Castelculier was built on the orders of Louis XIII. looped. During the Second World War, Laclotte Castle offered the maquis (the French resistance) shelter. During an action by the Gestapo from Agen, the castle was destroyed and the resistance fighters killed.
