Châtenois (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Châtenois (also House of Alsace ) is the name for the family of the dukes of (Upper) Lorraine from 1048 to 1452.

history

They descend in a direct (i.e. male) line from the Matfrieden , one of their subsidiary lines was the family of the Counts of Vaudémont , who received the Duchy back through inheritance in 1473 after the brief interlude by the House of Anjou (see also the list of family members of the House of Vaudémont ) .

The Châtenois family is thus a link between one of the oldest documented families in Europe that still exists today, whose name has been Habsburg-Lorraine since the middle of the 18th century .

The family seat was in Châtenois (Vosges) .

Individual evidence

  1. Charles II is the first Duke of Lorraine by that name. Since the 16th century, however, the Lorraine historians wanted to increase the legitimacy of the dukes through a direct connection with the Carolingians , by calling Duke Karl of Lower Lorraine , († 991), Charles I, and he is still called Charles II today .
