European Basketball Championship 1993

The men's basketball championship 1995 , officially Eurobasket 1995 , took place from June 21 to July 2, 1995 in Marousi near Athens . It was the 29th European Championships. In contrast to the last tournament, 14 teams took part in the final round. Originally the tournament was to be held with 12 teams, but the lifting of the exclusion of Yugoslavia made a change necessary. The team from "Rest of Yugoslavia", now supported by players from Serbia and Montenegro , became European champions and thus gave the Balkan state its first title win since the loss of its other republics. Lithuania won the silver medal, Croatia took bronze. Defending champion Germany did not make it past the preliminary round.

The European Basketball Championship is a biennial basketball competition between European national teams that is organized by Munich- based FIBA Europe , the European Basketball Association.

venue

All games were played in the Olympic Hall in the suburb of Marousi of Greece's capital Athens . Completed in 1995, the hall is one of the largest of its kind in Europe with 19,250 seats. Later it was also the venue for the 2004 Summer Olympics .

qualification

A total of 14 teams took part in the tournament, which qualified for the tournament in different ways:

  • Germany qualified as defending champions.
  • 10 participants were determined over two qualification rounds.
  • 2 further participants were determined in an additional qualifying round. This was set after the exclusion of Yugoslavia was lifted.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, seven teams played against each other in two groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time.
