The Ferrari 410 S , also Ferrari 410 Sport , was a racing car that Ferrari produced from 1955 to 1956. After the racing successes of the Ferrari 375 Plus , mainly in 1954 at the Carrera Panamericana , Ferrari decided to prepare another model for this racing category. The 410 S was designed from the ground up as an endurance racing car to be used in the 1955 Carrera Panamericana. It was the last model in the sports car line with a Lampredi V12 engine. Four copies were built (3 Spider and a Berlinetta ).
background
The Ferrari 410 S was conceived as a further development of the 375 Plus and was specially developed with the Panamericana in mind: all four serial numbers had the abbreviation CM, which stands for “Carrera Messicana” for the intended but not realized purpose, since the Panamericana 1955 after the Le Mans disaster was canceled.
This model represented a certain “ renaissance ” of the V12 engine after a phase in which the in-line six-cylinder was mainly used; the motor used here was still a design by Aurelio Lampredi. The next generation of racing cars to replace the 410 S were powered by the new V12 engines designed by Vittorio Jano .
Engine, transmission and chassis
The V-12 engine with a 60 ° bank angle was installed lengthways at the front. It had an overhead camshaft per cylinder bank and two valves per cylinder. Both the cylinder block and the cylinder head were made of a light metal alloy. Bore and stroke were 88 mm × 68 mm, displacement 4962.96 cm³; Compression 8.5: 1. The mixture was processed by three Weber carburetors (model 42DCZ / 4). There was a choice of single ignition with two ignition distributors or double ignition with four ignition distributors. The engine developed 380 hp (283 kW) at 6200 rpm, the maximum torque of 546 Nm was at 5000 rpm.
The 410 S had dry sump lubrication. The power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a multi-plate clutch and a manual transmission with five gears plus reverse gear. The basic version of the car reached a top speed of 280 km / h.
The chassis was made of tubular steel, the two-seater Spider body by Scaglietti was made of aluminum. The front wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones with coil springs, and a rigid De-Dion axle was installed on trailing arms and a transverse leaf spring at the rear . Both axles had hydraulic lever shock absorbers. All four wheels were equipped with drum brakes. The steering worked with a screw and roller
Racing history
The two Ferrari 410 S had their first use not as originally intended at the Carrera Panamericana , but at the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires on January 29, 1956. The first car was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Eugenio Castellotti ; the second 410 S drove Luigi Musso and Peter Collins . Although neither of the two racing cars reached the finish (broken axle shaft), they set a new lap record (average speed 165 km / h) with Collins at the wheel with a top speed of 303 km / h, which was impressive for the time. It was the only race in which the 410 S was used as a works car, as Ferrari was selling the cars. The first 410 S was sold to a Swedish driver who had only moderate sporting success with the car. The second car was bought in the USA by John Edgar, one of Ferrari's most important customers in this market. Edgar's driver Carroll Shelby drove the car in numerous races in the United States and achieved many victories in 1956, including in Palm Springs, National Seafair, National Palm Springs, Governor's Trophy and New Smyrna Beach.
Phil Hill and Richie Ginther also fielded the 410 S in the USA, with Ginther winning the Riverside race in 1957. The cars often had problems with the rear axles or the gears, which could not withstand the immense power. In 1957, a 410 S driven by Carroll Shelby achieved second place at the Cuba Grand Prix, which also featured a large number of other Ferraris. The same result was achieved at the 1958 Havana Grand Prix, this time with Masten Gregory .
Thanks to these successes, the 410 S helped bring Ferrari the reputation of a manufacturer of cars to be beaten in US endurance races.

Speciale
The Berlinetta Speciale was a one-off production with a closed body by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, s / n 0594CM. It was a special assignment from Michel Paul-Cavallier, an industrialist and former SEFAC director. ( Società Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili e Corse was the name under which Ferrari was registered as a stock corporation in 1960.) The body shape was similar to the Berlinettas designed by Pinin Farina , but had to be adapted to a shorter chassis with a wider track. The engine was converted to single ignition and had three Weber carburettors 42DCF / 3, which reduced the power to 345 hp. The car was based on a Type 519C racing car that was completed by July 1955 and delivered to its first owner with an ivory paintwork and blue leather interior. Like the racing cars, this one was right-hand drive.
Collector's value
The Ferrari 410 S has an exceptional collector's value given its extremely low production numbers and very high performance. In 2012, the Berlinetta Speciale s / n with serial number 0594CM was sold for $ 8.25 million at RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey. In 2014 the s / n 0594CM even achieved an auction price of 23 million US dollars at Rick Cole Auctions. That was the car with the shorter wheelbase and the single-plug engine (single ignition).
