The 2009/10 season was the 111th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 14 teams in the top division Top 14 and 16 teams in the second highest division Pro D2 .

Top 14

The regular season of the Top 14 had 26 game days (one first and one second round). It began on August 14, 2009 and lasted until April 25, 2010. The two best-placed teams qualified directly for the semi-finals and met the winners of the barrage games, which were played between the third to sixth placed. The semi-final winners met in the final on May 29, 2010 and played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy at the Stade de France . The ASM Clermont Auvergne prevailed against the USA Perpignan and won the championship title for the first time after ten unsuccessful attempts.

The last placed team, SC Albi , had to relegate to Pro D2. The US Montauban received no professional license due to financial problems and was forcibly relegated to the Fédérale 1 , whereby the poorly classified Aviron Bayonnais escaped relegation.

The regular season of the Pro D2 consisted of 30 game days (one first and one second round). It began on August 29, 2009 and lasted until May 9, 2010. The top-ranked team, the SU Agen , rose straight away. The teams in places 2 to 5 contested a playoff for the second promotion place, which Atlantique Stade Rochelais was able to secure on May 23, 2010. The SC Albi was relegated to the Amateur League Fédérale 1 . Since the US Montauban was relegated from the Top 14 directly to Fédérale 1, a relegation place in the Pro D2 was omitted and the Pays d'Aix RC thus escaped relegation.
