J1 Santa Croce sull'Arno
The J1 Santa Croce sull'Arno (officially Torneo Internazionale Citta di Santa Croce, 'Mauro Sabatini' ) is a world junior tennis tournament that has been held annually in May in the Italian town of Santa Croce sull'Arno in Tuscany since 1979 on a clay court hosted by the International Tennis Federation . It belongs to the second highest tournament category G1 and is one of the most important and traditional youth tournaments on the junior tennis tour.
history
Since its first edition, over 3500 different players from 90 nations have taken part in the competition. In the first two years the trophy was awarded in two categories, juniors and schoolchildren, from 1981 onwards only in the class of under 18s. In 1990, the ITF included the tournament in the ITF Junior Circuit and in 1992 classified it in the G1 category, in which the individual competitions are still held today.
Winners list
Santa Croce is considered to be the last major preparatory tournament for the French Open and is therefore traditionally strong. Numerous tournament winners made the leap into the top class of tennis. Five former world number one in singles triumphed in Santa Croce sull'Arno, including women Martina Hingis and Dinara Safina as well as men Evgeni Kafelnikow , Gustavo Kuerten and Andy Murray . In addition, with Anna Kurnikowa , Cara Black , Gisela Dulko , Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková, five other winners reached the top position in the double ranking .
