James White (politician)

James White (born June 16, 1749 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , † October 1809 in Louisiana Territory ) was an American politician . Between 1794 and 1796 he represented the Southwest Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives . He was previously a member of the Continental Congress for the State of North Carolina .

Career

James White attended a Jesuit college in St-Omer , which is now in France , but was then part of the Austrian Netherlands . He then studied medicine and law at the University of Pennsylvania . After graduating, he moved to North Carolina, where he also worked in politics. In 1785 he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives. From 1786 to 1788 he represented his state in the Continental Congress. In late 1786 he was also appointed Indian commissioner in the southern part of North Carolina. After leaving Congress, he moved to what was then the border area in the west and became one of the first settlers in Nashville in what would later become the state of Tennessee . In the 1780s, he also supported the plan of the founding of the State of Franklin from John Sevier .

In 1794 White became a member of the House of Representatives for the Southwest Territory. Between 1794 and 1796 he represented this territory as a delegate to the United States Congress . With the founding of Tennessee in 1796, this mandate expired. In 1799 White moved to what would later become the state of Louisiana. In 1804 he was appointed federal judge in the Orleans Territory by President Thomas Jefferson . James White died in Louisiana in 1809. His son Edward (1795-1847) was initially a congressman and from 1835 to 1838 governor of Louisiana. His grandson Edward White junior (1845-1921) served between 1910 and 1921 as chief federal judge .
