John McCreary (politician)

John McCreary (* 1761 in Chester County , Province of South Carolina , †  November 4, 1833 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John McCreary was born near the small town of Fishing Creek, 18 miles from Chester . He received private schooling and later became a land surveyor. He also worked in agriculture. Despite his youth, he took part in the War of Independence . Between 1794 and 1799 and again in 1802 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina . In Chester County he headed the police department as sheriff .

In the 1818 congressional elections, McCreary was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party in the eighth constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Wilson Nesbitt on March 4, 1819 . Up until March 3, 1821, however, he only served one term in Congress . After his tenure in the House of Representatives, McCreary worked on his plantation in South Carolina. He died there in November 1833.
