The Lafayette County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Mayo . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
history
Lafayette County was formed on December 23, 1856. It was named after the French Marquis de Lafayette , who had already fought under George Washington in the War of Independence .

The county has an area of 1419 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Suwannee County , Gilchrist County , Dixie County , Taylor County, and Madison County .

As of the 2010 census , Lafayette County had 8,870 people in 3,365 households. The population density was 6.3 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 77.4% white, 15.9% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 0.1% Asian Americans . 4.7% were members of other races and 1.4% of different races. 12.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 36.0% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 29.7% of all households. 70.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.63 people and the average family size was 3.10 people.
23.0% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 33.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 61.8% of the population were male and 38.2% were female.

In 2010, English was the first language of 91.21% of the population, 6.97% spoke Spanish and 1.82% had another mother tongue.
