final
August 26, 2015, 9:25 p.m. (3:25 p.m. CEST )
A high level in this discipline was already apparent in the semifinals. A time of at least 46.64 s was required to reach the final. It was difficult to find a clear favorite in terms of performance. Isaac Makwala from Botswana was the fastest semi-finalist with 44.11 s. Kirani James from Grenada was very close behind him with 44.16 s. The US defending champion LaShawn Merrit had also shown with 44.34 seconds that he was to be expected again.
The race started quickly, with the South African Wayde van Niekerk, James and Merrit in particular, setting a high pace. At the start of the home stretch, Makwala was still on the heels of the three leaders. But he degraded too much in the last hundred meters to keep up with the front. Finally Wayde van Niekerk prevailed against his competitors and became world champion in an excellent 43.68 s. Almost two tenths of a second behind him, LaShawn Merritt came in second with thirteen hundredths of a second ahead of Kirani James. Luguelín Santos was fourth, ahead of the Dominican Republic, who set a new national record with 44.22 s. This was followed by Isaac Makwala and, as the best European, the Brit Rabah Yousif in sixth place.
