List of locomotives and railcars of the Saxon state railways
This list contains the locomotives and railcars of the Royal Saxon State Railways .
Designation of the locomotives
First, as is common practice, the locomotives were given names. This was common for all vehicles until 1892. From 1893 to 1900 only passenger and express locomotives had name tags. After that, the signs were removed from all locomotives except for older shunting and branch line locomotives.
When naming the series, an attempt was made to assign appropriate groups of names to the series (rivers, Alpine peaks, American cities).
In addition to the names, the locomotives were also given list numbers (train numbers) which were also attached to the vehicles from 1869. A new numbering plan was introduced in 1892, trying to achieve a system. However, this was never achieved.
As this system became confusing and impractical with the ever increasing number of locomotives, a system was introduced in 1869 to differentiate between the individual series. The system consisted of an abbreviation for the manufacturer and a Roman numeral for each type.
Two years later, this system was changed and the numbers were used to designate a certain axis arrangement while retaining the manufacturer's abbreviations. In addition, the letters “a” (for old) and “b” (for new or second design) were introduced.

VII | B-mixed train locomotives from year of construction 1868 |
VIII | 2'B locomotives built from 1857 onwards |
In the period that followed, there were further changes in the designation system. So were used as a generic identifier
- F for Fairlie locomotives (from 1885)
- M for locomotives of the Meyer type (from 1889)
- Kl for Klose type locomotives (from 1889)
and as an additional identifier (behind the category number)
- T for tank locomotives (from 1876)
- K for small gauge: 750 mm narrow gauge locomotives (sometimes also before the class number)
- S for secondary railway locomotives (from 1884)
- O for bus train locomotives (from 1885)
- C for compound locomotives (from 1887), replaced by
- for composite locomotives (from 1889)
- M for meter gauge locomotives
- for superheated steam locomotives
introduced.
In 1885 the additional letter "b" was given the meaning "movable barrel axis". The last major reorganization of the generic name took place in 1896. The supplier has now been omitted. New classes of express and freight locomotives were given straight and freight trains, branch line and shunting locomotives were given odd class numbers. The narrow-gauge locomotives were given new generic names beginning with I. Locomotives of the same type but with different drive wheel diameters were given the additional numbers 1 (express train locomotives) and 2 (passenger train locomotives)

In addition to the vehicles listed in the table, the electric locomotives delivered by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel in 1905 for the Deuben State Railroad were also part of the Royal Saxon State Railways' inventory. As tram vehicles, they did not have a generic name, only numbers 1 and 2.
