Markus (first name)
Markus or Marcus is a male given name .
Origin and meaning of the name
Markus is derived from the common Latin first name Marcus (from * mart-kos , " consecrated to the Roman god of war Mars "). Originally it probably mostly referred to people who were born in March ; this month takes its name from the god of war Mars, and the Roman calendar originally began with March as the first month.
Since early Christianity, however, the reference of this name to the evangelist of the same name has been in the foreground.
distribution
In the first half of the 20th century, the name Markus was rarely used as a boy's first name in Germany. At the end of the 1950s, its popularity rose sharply. From the mid-sixties to the end of the seventies, the name was mostly among the ten most common of the respective year. At the beginning of the nineties, its popularity declined significantly.
