Markus (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Markus or Marcus is a male given name .

Origin and meaning of the name

Markus is derived from the common Latin first name Marcus (from * mart-kos , " consecrated to the Roman god of war Mars "). Originally it probably mostly referred to people who were born in March ; this month takes its name from the god of war Mars, and the Roman calendar originally began with March as the first month.

Since early Christianity, however, the reference of this name to the evangelist of the same name has been in the foreground.
