The Mazda3 (as Mazda Axela in Japan until 2019) is a compact class passenger car model from the Japanese car manufacturer Mazda . As the successor to the Mazda 323 , the car, which has been built since 2003, is located between the Mazda2 and the Mazda5 . The first and second generation of the Mazda 3 are technically related to the Ford Focus '04 and the Volvo S40 / V50 and have the floor pan and other components in common.

The first generation of the Mazda3 was presented in September 2003 at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main, initially as a five-door hatchback model with the name Mazda3 Sport . The four-door notchback sedan followed in February 2004. Both are based on Ford's C1 platform and were manufactured at Mazda’s Hōfu plant in Japan from June 2003 .

Naming

After the three-digit model designation of the Mazda models was given up in mid-2002 with the successor to the 626 in the form of the Mazda6 and the vehicles are now identified by single-digit numbers, the successor to the Mazda 323 in Europe was also given the simpler name Mazda3 in autumn 2003 . In Japan, the previous name Familia was replaced by Axela , while in North America the name was also changed from Protegé to Mazda3 .

Body styles

Like its predecessor 323 , the Mazda3 is offered as a four-door with notchback Mazda3 and five-door with hatchback as Mazda3 Sport . Both differ at the front through a different shape of the bonnet, through different lights and fog lights.

Across Europe, the hatchback accounts for around 80% of sales, in Germany alone it is as much as 84%.

Equipment

For both body versions in Germany the basic equipment Comfort , the comfortable Exclusive equipment and the upscale top version were available. Prices started at 15,800 euros (Mazda3 Sport 1.4 l MZR Comfort) and ended at 24,800 euros for the Mazda3 Sport 2.0 l MZR-CD Top.

In June 2005, the Active special model went on sale, which, in addition to the Exclusive equipment, was supplied with metallic paintwork, air conditioning , fog lights, touring computer and 16-inch alloy wheels as standard .

In October 2007 the prices and the equipment of the models were changed slightly. The special Active model now also had xenon headlights and seat heating, but the metallic paint was no longer standard. There was also the Active Plus special model with all the equipment of the Active version and leather seats, a mobile navigation device with hands-free facility and a Bose sound system with CD changer. The other special model was called Kintaro and had an all-round spoiler package from the Mazda “Z-Line” design series consisting of a modified radiator grille, side skirts, front and rear bumpers and a roof spoiler lip. Other features included lowering the car by 30 mm using Eibach sport springs, 17-inch light alloy wheels, piano lacquer applications and aluminum pedals in the interior, as well as a stainless steel exhaust cover from Sebring. This special model was only available with the two 2.0-liter engines. The special model Kintaro was limited to 1,500 pieces and only available in the colors cardinal red (A4A) and granite black metallic (16W).

Facelift

From July 2006 the revised Mazda3 was offered. Changed torque curves and a new manually shiftable six-speed gearbox with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine set the revised Mazda3 apart.

Other innovations were improved noise insulation, new tires and suspensions with a particularly low vibration. The keyless access system LogIn and the audio system HDD-Music-Box with 20 GB hard disk provided improved convenience . Externally, the facelift was noticeable through modified front and rear aprons, taillights and light alloy wheels. Other features were a different gear knob, a seat belt indicator for the front passenger, higher-quality interior inserts, materials and fabrics as well as new exterior paintwork, an optional Bose sound system, leather seats and cruise control .

All engines and the three equipment versions as well as the special Active model have been retained.

Among the previous engine versions of the Mazda3 joined in December 2006 MPS ( M Mazda P erformance S eries) with 191 kW (260PS) and 380 Nm of torque (presentation took place at the AMI 2006.). It is equipped with the 2.3-liter MZR-DISI turbo engine known from the Mazda6 MPS , accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds and reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 kilometers per hour. New aprons all around, a limited-slip differential , 18-inch alloy wheels, red decorative stitching in the interior and aluminum pedals are further features of the Mazda3 MPS. When it first appeared, the Mazda 3 MPS was one of the most powerful production vehicles with front-wheel drive in the world.

In the non-European markets, the MPS models are sold under the Mazdaspeed brand.

Engines

Two petrol engines were available for the market launch on October 25, 2003, followed by the smallest petrol engine and the modern common-rail diesel from PSA ( Peugeot / Citroën ) with 80 kW (109 PS). When it comes to engines, seven out of ten buyers opt for a gasoline engine; the market share of the 1.6 l MZR with 77 kW (105 PS) is 71% (as of August 2006).

After more than 1.5 million vehicles of the previous model were produced, the second generation of the Mazda3 was initially presented as a four-door notchback model at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of November 2008 . The five-door hatchback version followed at the Bologna Motor Show in early December 2008. Both versions were sold from April 2009 with partly new engines and a revised design.

The look was based on the Mazda6 GH without losing the basic shape of the first series of the Mazda3. With the same wheelbase of 2.64 meters, the dimensions grew only slightly. The main differences to the first generation were the new light edges on the bonnet, in the side sill area and the trunk lid, the now one-piece and lower radiator grille in the style of the Mazda RX-8 , which was redesigned in autumn 2008, and the larger and more three-dimensional lights on the front and rear. Other features of the second Mazda3 were the exposed front wheel arches and the spoiler edge on the rear of the four-door.

For America there were still two gasoline engines: a 2.0-l four-cylinder with 110 kW (150 hp) and a new 2.5-l engine that replaced the previous 2.3-l four-cylinder. The latter came from the Mazda6, developed 125 kW (170 hp) and was equipped with a double tailpipe.

For the European market, the 2.0-l gasoline engine was converted to DISI ("Direct Injection Spark Ignition") direct injection and continues to produce 110 kW (150 PS). This should reduce consumption by up to 20% and at the same time increase performance. Furthermore, a new ignition control as well as a variable valve control and a new catalytic converter were developed.

The highest trim level Mazda3 next to Sports Line set the Mazda3 MPS ( M Mazda P erformance S represents eries). In it, the 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder known from previous works, which 191 kW provides a torque of 380 Nm. By optimizing the vehicle's weight, fuel consumption was reduced by approx. 8%.

On October 15, 2011, a revised version of the Mazda3 was launched on the European market, including modified bumpers.

Other special features are a lane change assistant and a new start-stop system , the starting process of which is supposed to be about twice as fast as with other such systems. This is achieved by not using the classic starter, but instead stopping the engine in a certain position when it is switched off. The compressed mixture is ignited in the combustion chamber of one of the four cylinders and the engine starts up again very quickly. The advantage of this method is no longer just the increased speed. There is no need for a larger battery, the automatic start-stop function does not depend on the state of charge of the battery and there is no need for a reinforced starter.

The new Mazda3 replaced the previous model (BL) that had been built for almost five years in autumn 2013. The Mazda3 was shown as part of a world premiere that took place simultaneously in the metropolises of London, Saint Petersburg, Istanbul, Melbourne and New York.

First, the five-door hatchback appeared on October 18, 2013, followed by the classic notchback sedan on February 14, 2014.

At the start of sales, the range of engines included three gasoline engines with direct injection and a turbodiesel. The petrol engines have the “i-stop” start-stop system. The base engine, reduced in displacement from 1.6 liters to 1.5 liters, has an output of 74 kW (100 hp). The 2.0 liter naturally aspirated engine has a very high compression ratio of 14.1: 1. It has an output of 88 kW (120 PS) or 121 kW (165 PS). The top version is coupled with a system for braking energy recovery, the Mazda SKYACTIV technology "i-ELOOP" (Intelligent Energy Loop). If the vehicle is braked or moved in overrun mode, a generator converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in a super capacitor . It then supplies the electrical consumers in the vehicle; that should save up to 10% gasoline.

The 2.2-liter turbodiesel has an unchanged output of 110 kW (150 hp). A manual six-speed gearbox is standard, and a six-speed automatic transmission is available for the 88 kW petrol engine and diesel at an additional cost.

For the Japanese market combined Mazda 2013 Mazda3 already in the Hybrid Synergy Drive from Toyota with its own 2.0-liter engine.

In February 2017, after a facelift, the Mazda 3 with the type designation BN appeared.

The fourth generation of the Mazda3 was presented at the LA Auto Show in November 2018 and sales in Germany were announced for March 2019. The vehicle is built as a sedan with a hatchback or notchback. Special mention should be made of the new gasoline engine with homogeneous compression ignition , which will be available from September 2019 , the extensive equipment and the assistance systems.

It stands on the new Skyactiv platform and, unlike its predecessor with a more complex but also heavier multi-link rear axle , has a torsion beam rear axle . The structure and choice of materials for the carpet and headlining were noise-dampened.

Mazda had already given a preview of the vehicle with the Kai Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2017 .

In addition to the 85 kW (116 PS) 1.8-liter diesel engine, a 90 kW (122 PS) 2.0-liter gasoline engine with cylinder deactivation and a 24 V mild hybrid system is available at the start of sales . The 2.0-liter Skyactiv X gasoline engine with compression ignition has been available to order since June 2019 and has an output of 132 kW (180 hp); it has been delivered since autumn 2019. The 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an output of 110 kW (150 hp) followed in January 2020. A 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 139 kW (189 PS) or 169 kW (230 PS) is available in a charged version only in North America .

Registration numbers

Since the start of sales in 2003 up to and including December 2019, a total of 221,562 Mazda3s have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2005 was the most successful sales year with 21,592 units.
