Nicole is a small community with 225 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in France in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

geography

Nicole is located on the right bank of the Garonne River , about a kilometer below the confluence of the Lot . When the Lot broke through the last foothills of the Massif Central , a viewing plateau was formed, the Peche de Berre , on the flank of which the place extends today.

Since the estuary of the Lot is not navigable by ships, a small canal (Le Canalet) branches off at Aiguillon , which leads the ships to Nicole, where they can descend to the Garonne via a lock . If you drive about five kilometers upstream on the Garonne, you can leave it again at the lock of Saint-Léger , where the Baïse joins. This way you also reach the Canal latéral à la Garonne (German: Garonne-Seitenkanal ). The Garonne can only be crossed when the water level is normal.

history

  • The place on the Pech de Berre was inhabited from the earliest times. A Bronze Age settlement was discovered there, as well as Gallic and Roman settlements. There are remains of fortifications from the early Middle Ages .
  • In 1291, on behalf of Edward I (King of England) , Bertrand Raymond de Campagne signed a paréage treaty with Gaillard de la Roque , Abbot of Clairac , to build a bastide on Nicole's territory. There are no documents about the exact location, and the exact year of construction is unclear. It is certain that the bastide was built on the hill Pech de Berre and that it was abandoned again in the middle of the 17th century.
  • The current church was built around 1750, rectangular in a neo-Romanesque style. At the time it was practically built outside of the village. In 1883 there were only about ten houses in his neighborhood. Later the place developed closer to the river bank.
  • In 1887 an 18 meter high cross was erected on the Peche de Berre and consecrated by the Bishop of Agen on Easter Monday. It was the largest cross in France at the time.

Attractions
