reception

The series achieved a rating of 8.5 stars based on 3725 votes in the Internet Movie Database. On Rotten Tomatoes , the first season got a rating of 96 percent based on 76 critic votes, and 85 percent with 515 votes from users. The second season also received a critic rating of 97 percent based on 33 reviews and a viewer rating of 90 percent based on 102 votes. At Metacritic, the series was also rated positively with 76 percent (as of October 30, 2019).

The series received particular praise from the LGBT community as it features the highest number of transgender characters of any television series in the world. Most of the main characters are portrayed by transgender actors, which is not common on (American) television. In addition, the diversity of the series was highlighted positively, as many of the characters have African American or Latin American roots.

Richard Lawson praised the series in Vanity Fair as “a dedicated portrait of both dark and happy days. Pain and perseverance are combined here to create something that is fantastic and yet humble. ”Therefore, Pose is “ long overdue ”.

Matt Zoller Seitz, an editor at New York , also rated the production positively, as it “shows American viewers a world that has never been visualized in such detail on television and with such a large budget. The camera pans up and down like in a Scorsese epic, in both the indoor and outdoor scenes. It is evident that FX spared no expense to correctly display the clothes, cars, streets, billboards and even the characteristic yellow-brown street lights. "

Willa Paskin from Slate rated Pose rather negatively. Although it comes from Ryan Murphy, one of the "smartest" authors at the moment, the series seems like a "teaching example". At the same time, many of the characters are "strong women and transgender role models" and yet have "unmistakably negative" traits.

Pose cannot be called radical just because of its unparalleled cast of transgender actors. It's also a breathtaking mix of queer 80s soap opera and sensitive AIDS drama with the dizzying spirit of a Baz Luhrmann musical. A mix that Hollywood has never dared to try. "

- Marietta Steinhart : The time

Pose paints an impressive picture of the social extremes in a crazy city, a crazy country. This makes the series brand new and also comments on the current situation in the divided United States of America. But much more so that she interprets ectasis and depression as a systematic permanent condition than as a short-term phenomenon. (...) In doing so, Pose also takes up the social issues of the 80s and the LGTB subculture in the USA: contraception, AIDS, gender, sex surgery, drugs, fashion shows and discrimination. (...) For the average heterosexual, white European, all of this is very far away. Netflix is therefore very reluctant to advertise the series in this country. In doing so, she shows the unknown and helps to understand the United States and its people. (...) Pose is a deeply emphatic series - party and contemplation at the same time - that shows what it means to be American, homosexual, black, terminally ill or all together. A series that arouses understanding and compassion - and certainly belongs to the best that we will see on the series market in 2019. "
