The oldest club in the Balearic Islands was founded by Adolfo Vázquez Humasqué. He first named the club after the king Junta Directiva del Alfonso XIII FBC . The club later became Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII , only to be renamed Club Deportivo Mallorca in 1931 for political reasons . The word real was then added in 1949 .

In its history, RCD Mallorca played 26 years in the Primera División and 29 years in the Segunda División A as well as two years in the Segunda División B and 11 years in the Tercera División . The greatest successes were winning the Spanish Cup in 2003 and taking part in the final in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, where they lost 2-1 to Lazio .

President Mateu Alemany sold 93 percent of his shares to an investment group in August 2008. According to the Spanish media, the purchase price was 4 to 5 million euros. Alemany bought its shares in the association for 1.5 million euros from the contractor Vicenc Grande. The new owner was Grupo Safin, a consulting and accounting company.

On May 20, 2010 it was announced that Gregorio Manzano would leave the club for financial reasons. RCD Mallorca reportedly owed 60 million euros at the time. UEFA announced on July 22, 2010 that Mallorca would be excluded from the current Europa League season. The association named the association's high level of debt as the reason.

In November 2010, the German manager Utz Claassen joined Mallorca as an investor and became a member of the board of directors. The club was relegated to the 2nd division at the end of the 2012/2013 season.

Claasen was elected President of the Club in December 2014. From January 2015 to January 2016 he held the majority of the shares in the club and was appointed Consejero Delegado (Managing Director). In January 2016, ACQ Lagacy Partners LLC acquired 80 percent of the shares for 20 million euros. The investor group is owned by the Phoenix Suns -Eigentümer Robert Sarver , vice-president of the Phoenix Suns Andy Kohlberg and two-time NBA - MVP Steve Nash . The remaining 20 percent is held by Utz Claassen.

From February 10, 2015 until the end of the season, the Spaniard Miquel Soler was the head coach of RCD Mallorca. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Albert Ferrer trained the first team. The former Barca player's goal was to return to the Primera Division in the year of the club's 100th anniversary; however, he was replaced during the season by his assistant coach Pepe Gálvez . At the end of the 2016/17 season, Real Mallorca was relegated to the third division. In the following 2017/18 season, he was promoted directly back to the Segunda División. At the end of the 2018/19 season, RCD Mallorca prevailed against Deportivo La Coruña in the promotion round and returned to the Primera División.
