Career

De Silvestro began her motorsport career in karting in 2002 , where she was active until 2004. In 2005 she joined the Formula racing and went in the Italian Formula Renault at the start. She was 20th overall. In 2006 de Silvestro moved to the USA and competed in the US Formula BMW . Although she didn't win a race, she finished fourth overall at the end of the season.

In 2007 de Silvestro moved to the Atlantic Championship for Walker Racing . She did not keep up with her teammate Ryan Lewis and finished 19th overall at the end of the season. In 2008 she moved to Newman Wachs Racing and became a teammate of Jonathan Summerton . On the first race weekend, de Silvestro celebrated her first victory in the Atlantic Championship. In the further course of the season, she no longer kept up with Summerton and finished eighth overall at the end of the season. In 2009 she played her third season in the Atlantic Championship for the Stargate Worlds team . She scored four wins and another five podium finishes. With one race to go, de Silvestro led the championship, but was overtaken in the final race by future champions John Edwards and Summerton. At the end of the season, she finished third overall. She finished every race among the top ten drivers.

De Silvestro's car in Indianapolis, 2010

In 2010 she competed in the IndyCar Series for HVM Racing . In her very first race in the IndyCar Series, she led the field thanks to a different strategy. Due to braking problems, she only finished the race in 16th place. At the race in Fort Worth , she made headlines with a fire accident after which she sat in her burning car for around 30 seconds. With slight burns on her right hand, she survived the accident almost unharmed. After she achieved a placement in the top ten for the first time as ninth in Toronto , she achieved her best placement of the season with eighth place in Lexington . At the end of the season she finished 19th overall. She also became the second best rookie behind Alex Lloyd , who had already competed in three IndyCar races before the season.

In 2011 de Silvestro stayed with HVM Racing. Already at the season opener in Saint Petersburg she achieved her best IndyCar result with a fourth place. In the duel with Tony Kanaan she had the chance of a podium place until the last lap. In the fourth race in São Paulo , de Silvestro, in which she achieved the fastest race lap, was again in focus. However, since she was nine laps behind due to a collision at the start, she was unable to convert her performance into a place in the front field. De Silvestro had a serious accident while training for the Indianapolis 500 . She lost control of her vehicle, hit the barrier and fell on the track after a rollover. The vehicle caught fire. De Silvestro left the car on his own. The subsequent examination at the hospital diagnosed second-degree burns on her hands. She took part in the race anyway, but didn't finish. After an accident in West Allis , the doctors denied her permission to start the race that followed. In Sonoma , she had to skip another race after being denied entry to the United States. She finished the season in 20th place in the drivers' championship.

2012 de Silvestro denied another IndyCar season. Your team was factory-supported by Lotus this season and was called Lotus-HVM Racing . De Silvestro was given the opportunity to be the first to test the new IndyCar chassis, the Dallara DW12 , with a Lotus engine manufactured by Engine Developments . Since the Lotus engine was significantly weaker than the IndyCar engines from Chevrolet and Honda , it was unable to set times within the 105 percent rule in the Indianapolis 500 , so it was taken out of the race after ten laps. After this race there were no more drivers with Lotus engines besides de Silvestro. Although Lotus was allowed several reworks to the engine, de Silvestro and HVM Racing were unable to keep up with the other teams. De Silvestro was thus with a 13th place as the best result 24th in the drivers' classification.

After the 2012 season, de Silvestro took part in test drives for KV Racing Technology . One day after these tests, she received a contract with the racing team for the IndyCar Series 2013 . De Silvestro took their two main sponsors Entergy and Areva with them to their new team. At the season opener in Saint Petersburg , she achieved her best starting position to date with third place in qualifying. In the final stages of the race, de Silvestro was back in third place. Since her tires deteriorated more than those of her competitors, she fell back to sixth position in the last two laps. After reaching the top 10 three times in the first four races, she only managed to do so once in the following ten races. In the last five races she was always in the top 10. She finished fifth in Baltimore . At the subsequent event in Houston , de Silvestro achieved her first IndyCar podium with a second place in the first race. This made her the third woman, after Sarah Fisher and Danica Patrick , to achieve an IndyCar podium. De Silvestro finished the season in 13th place overall. With 362 to 397 points she was defeated by her teammate Kanaan, who had won the Indianapolis 500 .

After de Silvestro lost her IndyCar cockpit at KV Racing Technology in 2014, she was presented by the Sauber Formula 1 racing team as an Affiliated Driver with the aim of obtaining a Formula 1 super license for 2015. In April she completed her first test in a Formula 1 car in a 2012 Sauber C31 . Due to budget problems, de Silvestro's involvement with Sauber ended prematurely.

In 2015 de Silvestro returned to the IndyCar Series. At Andretti Autosport , she received a contract that was initially only valid for the season opener. It was used in two other races. She was fourth in Louisiana . In addition, de Silvestro competed for Andretti Autosport in two races of the FIA Formula E Championship in 2015 . She also competed in a V8 supercar race . For the FIA Formula E Championship 2015/16 , de Silvestro received an Andretti cockpit for the entire season. At the Long Beach ePrix she was the first woman to score points in Formula E with ninth place . She also came ninth in Berlin . She finished the season in 18th place overall. Internally she lost to Robin Frijns with 4 to 45 points .

De Silvestro then signed a three-year contract with Kelly Racing for the Australian V8 Supercars racing series. This was preceded by two guest starts at the six-hour Bathurst 1000 race at the Mount Panorama Circuit , the season highlight of the V8 Racecars series.
