history

The area around Mühlbachl, Matrei and Pfons was settled over 3000 years ago. Two important trade routes meet in Mühlbachl, the Brennerstrasse to Innsbruck and the old salt route to Hall. Illyrian burial grounds have been discovered in this area . From the large number of grave goods we can conclude that there was a wealthy prehistoric settlement in the Mühlbachler area.

The Roman road station Matreyum was probably located on the castle hill.

The so-called front fortress Matrei was built in the 12th century. It was owned by the Counts of Andechs , then the castle fell to Heinrich von Neiffen.

The rear fortress Matrei , built later, was passed on to the Habsburgs, Herr von Matrei . In 1369 the only daughter of Herr von Matrei bequeathed the castle to her husband Hans Trautson von Sprechenstein. Today the castle is owned by the princes of Auersperg . In the last days of the Second World War, Trautson Castle was largely destroyed by bombing. Today there is only one farm building left of the castle.

A parish amalgamation with Matrei and Pfons was rejected in 1974 on the occasion of a referendum.
