history

Thalheim was originally a Waldhufendorf . It was created at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1447. The assumed founding date is the year 1184. The original core of the settlement was grouped around the first Thalheim church, which was probably located between the rectory and the cemetery opposite. Today the Chemnitzer Straße ( B 180 ) leads over this point.

Over time, the place in the valley expanded. Later the development moved up the flatter slopes of the side valleys. From 1799 onwards, arsenic was mined in the mine "Unexpected happiness and God's will" . Due to its special quality, the mined arsenic was given the name Thalheimite in 1866 . After Clemens Winkler contains Thalheimit 34.02% iron, 44.00% arsenic, 19.77% sulfur and 0.92% Bergart. The hosiery can be traced back to the first stocking knitter Melchior Hahn in 1730.

Thalheim only became a city through the hosiery industry. As a result of a massive upswing, the place has attracted many immigrants since the last third of the 19th century. The award of town charter in 1925 took this development into account. At peak times, 52 companies produced textiles, especially hosiery . After the Second World War, the economy slowly recovered. However, a concentration process was gradually decreed by the state, which finally allowed all stocking knitting to be merged into one large combine - the VEB Strumpfkombinat ESDA Thalheim. One of the largest companies in the GDR had its headquarters here, although it still had branches in many places in what is now the Erzgebirge district. The loss of sales markets in hosiery in the aftermath of reunification resulted in the loss of many jobs with negative consequences for the entire city. In the absence of other larger businesses, people got into need, as did the city budget. By 2010, many of the old factory buildings had been demolished.

Culture and sights

Buildings

  • The Evangelical Lutheran Church is one of the landmarks of the city of Thalheim. It was inaugurated on November 10, 1850 after a construction period of only 16 months. The church builder Christian Friedrich Uhlig built it in the style of classicism . The church is 39 meters long and has a 48 meter high bell tower with 5 bells. A special feature is the romantic church organ, which was created and installed by the traditional company Jehmlich in 1922 after the original Göthel organ was destroyed in the First World War .
  • The “Thalheim Town Hall” : In February 1906, the local council confirmed the recommendations of the building committee to build a new administration building with a council cellar and post office. The architect Ernst Beier from Chemnitz could be interested in the Thalheim project. The councilors liked the first draft. After the church, Thalheim came to a second stately building that characterizes the townscape and is now a listed building. The attractive town hall, which the Rochlitz porphyry mainly gives the outside and elements of Art Nouveau inside, was a bit generous for village conditions. The council chamber is a gem with its lead-glazed windows, the color and symbolic of which represent motifs of the infrastructure and cosmopolitanism. The exposed and reconditioned coffered ceiling as well as the walls designed using chamber pull technology together with other details (columns, candlesticks, paintings) result in a truly venerable space in which council meetings, marriages and small concerts take place.
  • After a successful restoration, the historic oil mill "Wiesenmühle" has a fully functional grinding and tampering mechanism. It was first mentioned in a document in 1577, and in 1838 the mill was installed. Today it is a technical museum and is a listed building . In the neighboring house there is also a café with an attached guesthouse.

Excursion destinations

  • The idyllic "Heimateck Rentners Ruh" is a central excursion point for locals and tourists. The facility on the "Pionierweg" nature trail consists of a central log cabin with catering and a miniature facility. This exhibits historic Thalheim buildings in which people or constructions are moved with the help of the water power of the adjacent stream. In addition, various cultural events take place at the Heimateck every year.
  • The restored “Will Gottes” mine tunnel has been open to visitors since 1998. The tunnel, which has existed since 1510, was once dug for silver ore and later successfully for arsenic gravel. This gravel got the special name "Thalheimit" due to its special quality. After 1846, however, the mining operation ceased due to the bankruptcy of the customer operation. Since 1994 the pit has been opened up again for museum purposes and parts of the mining facilities have been repaired. A refuge was also built in front of the tunnel.
  • The "Neukirchner Villa" offers a variety of cultural events, especially cabaret, in a historical setting. There are seminar rooms and a wedding hall of the local registry office available.
  • The former sports and adventure pool has been closed since August 31, 2014.
  • The "Waldcampingplatz" is located between the former Erzgebirgsbad and sports park .
  • The “Sportpark Thalheim” offers four tennis and two badminton courts, two bowling alleys, a fitness area with a small sauna and a separately accessible 50 m shooting range, as well as a restaurant and accommodation for athletes.

  • A memorial stone next to the grove of honor commemorates the communist Max Helbig, who was shot on May 1, 1945.
  • Another memorial stone in the same place reminds of unborn life.
