Until the church is planted

Bechtsrieth was mentioned in a document in 1408 as "Perchtersreuth" and in 1436 as "Perchtolzriet". The name ending -reuth or -riet , which is related to the word clearing , indicates that Bechtsrieth was created as a clearing settlement on the upper reaches of the Naab and its side courses as part of the large land development from the 11th to the beginning of the 13th century . The place on the Gleitsbach, a tributary of the Luhe, was probably a clearing that was led by a Berthold. Such deforestation leaders mostly led farmers willing to settle in previously unused areas on behalf of the sovereign . The sovereigns were very interested in the development of their lands, since more agricultural land meant greater crop yields and thus higher tax revenues.

The northern Upper Palatinate was at least before the arrival of the first German or Bavarian settlers, but probably also during the first years and decades of clearing work, interspersed with widely distributed Slavic settlement islands. Refer to it e.g. B. the names of the Gleitsbach and the neighboring village of Trebsau , which are of Slavic origin according to the Germanist Ernst Schwarz from Erlangen . Over the centuries of coexistence, the Slavic population merged with the German population.

The Landgraves of Leuchtenberg had goods and rights in the place for a long time. Around the middle of the 16th century they owned six farms and two fiefs in Bechtsrieth . Around the middle of the 18th century, Bechtsrieth consisted of 26 properties and a shepherd's house. In addition to the farmers, there was a miller , a weaver , a tailor and a shepherd . In 1808 a tax district was formed from the village of Bechtsrieth, the village of Trebsau and the desert Trebsauermühle.

The part of the municipality Trebsau was a country estate with the right to the lower jurisdiction . The aristocratic residence was owned by the von Preisling family from the 18th to the middle of the 19th century. The phoenix in the front half of the shield of today's municipal coat of arms goes back to their coat of arms .

The town hall of the municipality of Bechtsrieth

The political communities Bechtsrieth (with a population of 30 families at the time) and Trebsau (23 families), founded in 1821, were merged in 1854 to form the Bechtsrieth community.

20th century

After the end of the Second World War , the population of Bechtsrieth experienced a considerable increase. Initially, many displaced people settled in the so-called old settlement. Since the mid-1960s, Bechtsrieth became very popular as a place of residence for commuters , especially to Weiden , which led to an expansion, especially in the eastern residential areas. As before, there are several agricultural enterprises in the town.

Bechtsrieth and Trebsau together form a branch community of the Catholic parish Schirmitz , whose branch church St. Josef is located in Bechtsrieth.

At the same time, the community was included in the administrative community Schirmitz.

coat of arms

Blazon: split between blue and silver, in front a silver phoenix rising from red flames , behind a blue bar.

The phoenix in the front half of the shield is taken from the coat of arms of the von Preisling family, who held the state estate or patrimonial court of Trebsau from 1706 to 1848 . The phoenix also symbolically reminds of the resurrection of the community of Bechtsrieth on January 1, 1994, after the community had fought for years and finally with success against the merger with Irchenrieth implemented in the course of the regional reform in 1978 . The rear field, in silver a blue bar, shows the coat of arms of the Leuchtenbergers, to whose sovereign territory, the Landgraviate of Leuchtenberg , the municipality area belonged from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.
