The University of Ottawa ( English University of Ottawa , French Université d'Ottawa , also uOttawa ) is a university in Ottawa , the capital of Canada . It was founded in 1848 as the College of Bytown by the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary .

The main campus is in downtown Ottawa, near the government district .

Rankings and teaching

The University of Ottawa is one of the oldest universities in Canada and the largest bilingual university in the world. According to the 2014/15 international university ranking of the World's Best Universities , it ranks 218 and 11th among the best universities in Canada. Most courses are considered to be research-intensive ( very-high level of research intensity ); at least references, very good grades and aptitude tests are required as admission requirements.

With around 30,000 students, bilingualism is generally a prerequisite, as all lectures are held in two languages . Depending on the number of seminar applicants and the resulting distribution key, which can vary per semester, the students are offered the individual courses in English (68%) or in French (32%). Lessons and exams are completed in the two different languages over the course of the course.

Theoretically, certain courses could also be completed in only one preferred language, but this is avoided in practice because of the risk of losing too much time, because due to the allocation key, the language of instruction expressly desired by the student can be successfully allocated to the next possible course place (in the other Language). With frequent such waiting times, the time to graduation can exceed that of the minimum study period by up to several semesters.
