The Premjer-Liha ( Ukrainian Прем'єр-ліга , Premjer-Liha ) is the top division in Ukrainian football . The league was founded in 1991 and currently consists of 12 teams. Since 1996 the Wyschtscha Liha and the Perscha Liha (second highest division) of the "Professional Football League" (Професіональна футбольна ліга, Professionalna Futbolna Liha , PFL ) were directed. The PFL comprises 67 professional football clubs with 78 teams. Some clubs are represented by several teams in the professional area. The Premjer-Liha has been an independent organization since 2008. It was also called Wyschtscha Liha until 2008, based on the former Soviet Wysschaya League .
Reigning champion is Shakhtar Donetsk , who, with 12 championship titles, is the second most successful club behind Dynamo Kiev (15 championship titles). Only these two clubs have so far participated in all seasons of the top Ukrainian league. Besides them, only Tawrija Simferopol could win a championship.
mode
The 12 teams play against each other twice during the first phase of the season; once at home and once away. After each team has played its first 22 games, the league is divided into two groups with six participants each. Within the first group, the championship group, the first six clubs placed in the table up to the 22nd matchday play for the championship, while the remaining six teams in the second, the relegation group, fight for relegation. Within these groups, too, each team plays one home and one away game against each of its group members, meaning that each club has played at least 32 games at the end of the entire season.
At the end of the season, the last-placed team descends in the second division, the Perscha Liha , while the two teams in places 10 and 11 each play two relegation games against the second and third-placed Perscha Liha to stay up.
The season starts at the end of July and ends at the end of May. At the end of the first half of the season there will be a three-month winter break from early December to early March for climatic reasons. In contrast to most European leagues, the winter break is longer than the summer break. At the end of the season, the last two teams will be relegated.
An exception was the first season in 1992, which lasted only six months. The last season of the first Soviet league ended in autumn 1991. However, the Ukrainian Football Association decided to switch the season from the calendar year to an autumn-spring mode. In the first season, 20 teams were divided into two groups of ten teams each, which played against each other twice. The two group winners determined the champion in a final. After this transition season, today's mode was introduced. After changing the number of participants between 14, 16 and 18, it stayed at 16 from 2009 to 2013 and gradually decreased to 12 by 2016.
A “golden game” was introduced with the 2005/06 season. If the first two teams are tied at the end of the season, such a "golden game" will be played between these two teams. Such a game was necessary in the very first season. Shakhtar Donetsk beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 after extra time.
