University of Windsor is a Canadian full university in Windsor , the southernmost city of Canada with around 16,000 students in the metropolitan area of Metro Detroit on the border between Canada and the United States .

Predecessor universities

The now church-independent university was founded in 1963 from the Roman Catholic College Assumption University founded in 1857 and the Anglican Canterbury College, which was adopted in 1957, and the Uniate Iona College, which was adopted in 1962 . In 1963 Essex University was incorporated.

location

The university is on the border with the US car city Detroit , home of the three large US companies Ford , General Motors and Chrysler . The 50 hectare campus , located a few kilometers from the city center, is framed by the Detroit River and the Ambassador Bridge , which leads to Detroit.

University life

Approx. ten percent of the students are not from Canada. The Canadian Auto Workers union set up the CAW Student Center on campus , which serves as the central student meeting point. Important libraries are the Leddy Library and the Paul Martin Law Library of the Faculty of Law. The university is known for the opportunities for student sports, particularly football , beach volleyball, and hockey .
