Opening Ceremony
Starting at 8:00 PM CST (UTC+8),[3] the four-hour opening ceremony was attended by 91,000 spectators,[4] including U.S. President George W. Bush; Princess Anne, Princess Royal; Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin; French President Nicolas Sarkozy; Constantine II of Greece; Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd; UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi; Montengrin president Filip Vujanović; Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo; and Gordon Campbell, premier of British Columbia, the Canadian province hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The spectacle was directed by filmmaker Zhang Yimou, and the Olympic Cauldron was lit by gymnast Li Ning.[5]

  • The USA men's basketball team beat hosts China 101–70 in the first, much-anticipated game in the basketball event. Yao Ming, the Chinese star player, scored the first shot of the tournament, but limped off at the end of the third quarter due to an ankle injury.[17]

  • Entering into the finals in fourth place, Abhinav Bindra became the first Olympian from India to win an individual Olympic gold medal.[38] This was India's first gold medal in an Olympic event since 1980.[39]
