Radical 96 , meaning “ jade , nephrite ”, is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with five strokes. With 104 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The sign shows three pieces of jade tied together. The point distinguishes it from the sign for "king", whose symbol was the jade. The character 王 for king, with four lines, is a variant or combination of characters to the radical 96 玉 for jade, which is written with five lines.
There are two explanations why three horizontal bars and one vertical bar became a king. Xu Shen explains in his work Shuowen jiezi (说文解字) about 王: "王 wang, the one to whom everything on earth belongs".
Dong Zhongshu , a later drawing researcher, defined:
- "The one who once created the writing / culture (文 whom)". Three lines connected with each other: The three horizontals are heaven , earth and man , who connects them is 王 (wang), the king. Confucius said: "Three have always formed the 王 (wang) king".
The three horizontal lines represent heaven, earth and people, the vertical line that connects them and the form 王 (wang) form the king to whom everything on earth belongs.
However, Zuo Min'an (左 民 安) says in his work Hanzi Liehua (汉字 例 话 Chinese characters / examples and explanations):
- “王 (wang) is originally the image of a large ax, a powerful weapon in ancient times. Whoever possessed it had power to suppress. And only the highest ruler - the king - has this power. "
This derivation has for itself that the seal script form of 王 actually resembles the image of an ax.
In the compound symbol, 王 (wang) often appears as a carrier of the sound, as in 汪 (wang deep and wide water), 枉 (wang crooked, sloping), 旺 (wang blooming, lush), 狂 (kuang insane), 皇 (huang emperor) , 匡 (correct kuang).
王 (wang) rarely functions as a bearer of meaning, but for example in 闰 (run, in: 闰月 runyue leap month ). Here 王 (wang) comes from the custom that the emperor had to perform the ritual of the first day sacrifice on the first day of the lunar calendar . In normal months this took place inside the temple, but in the leap month in front of its great gate. Therefore 门 (= gate, door) and 王 (wang king, ruler) became components of the sign 闰 (run): The king in the door means leap month.
