This character no longer occurs as a single character. The oracle bones and bronze form show a bird with a short tail, which is why the characters with 隹 as a bearer of meaning belong in the context of birds such as 雀 (麻雀 = sparrow), 雁 (大雁 = wild goose), 雕 (in: 老 雕 = vulture). 雇 (= rent) consists of 户 (hu) as a carrier of sound and 隹 as a carrier of meaning and originally referred to a migratory bird. Also 难 (= difficult) initially stood for a bird and only later assumed the meaning difficult as a loan symbol. 集 (= gathering) originally consisted of three 隹, two below, one above and one 木 (mu = tree) below: three birds have gathered on a tree. As a sound carrier, 隹 functions in numerous characters such as 椎 (= cervical vertebra), 锥 (= awl), 谁 (= who), 堆 (= spur), 推 (= push), 唯 or 惟 (= alone) and on behalf of the Huai River淮. 售 (= sell) actually spelled itself with 言 (= word) on the left and 雠, two birds on the right, which served as sound carriers.
