Chappes is about 24 kilometers east-northeast of Montluçon . Chappes is surrounded by the neighboring communities Chavenon in the north, Saint-Sornin in the northeast, Deux-Chaises in the east, Sazeret in the south and southeast, Saint-Priest-en-Murat in the south and southwest and Murat in the west and northwest.
