Saint-Marcel-en-Marcillat is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of La Petite-Marche in the north, Marcillat-en-Combraille in the east and northeast, Saint-Fargeol in the southeast, Saint-Hilaire in the south and southeast, and Château-sur-Cher in the south and southwest and Chambonchard in the west.
