Commentry is a municipality in France . It belongs to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , the Allier department , the Montluçon arrondissement and is passed by the Œil River .
The giant dragonfly Meganeura monyi was found in the Commentry coal seams in the Stephan mountains in the 1880s .
Geography and traffic
Malicorne is in the north of the municipality . To the east is Colombier , in the south of La Celle . In the south-west Durdat-Larequille borders on Commentry and in the west and north-west Néris-les-Bains . The train station of Commentry is located on the railway line from Montlucon to Moulins . The former route nationale 698 and a railway line of the SNCF to Gannat run through the municipality .
history
In the second half of the 19th century Commentry was too rapid flowering brought by the exploitation of a major 21 km 2 large coal camp of remarkable purity, which was then the fifth largest in extent and fertility in France. The city also had a large ironworks. On June 6, 1882, Commentry was the first town in which Christophe Thivrier, a socialist mayor , was elected. In September 1902, the founding congress of the French Socialist Party ( Parti socialiste de France ) took place in Commentry , which existed until 1905 and then became part of the Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière .
