In the 19th century the community, which also includes several hamlets and farmsteads, consistently had between 500 and 825 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants fell in the first half of the 20th century to the low of 560 in 1931. In 1974 parts of the neighboring Sauljon were incorporated.

economy

For centuries agriculture and viticulture have played the dominant roles in the municipality's economic life. Estivareilles is part of the Vignoble de la région de Montluçon wine region . Since the 1970s, the municipality has also had marginal income from renting holiday homes ( gîtes ).

history

Little information is available about the history of the place. However, a Romanesque church that was demolished in 1894 and the lantern ( Lanterne des Morts ) that was formerly installed in the cemetery indicate that the place was inhabited for a long time. During the French Revolution , Estivareilles was the capital of the canton for ten years (1790–1800).

Attractions

  • In the middle of the village there is a four and a half meter high lampier on a stepped round base - the easternmost and one of the smallest in France. A monolithic, conical roof rests on the clunky-looking masonry column shaft , the processing of which imitates stone shingles ( lauzes ). The interior of the column shaft can be entered through a man-high door; In the past, a tallow candle was placed above a ladder on a wooden pedestal - the light then penetrated through four narrow slit openings. The funeral lamp is dated to the 12th century and would be one of the oldest in France; it has been classified as a Monument historique since 1928 .
  • The parish church of Saint-Sébastien dates from 1896; the single-nave building has a transept and a bell tower above the portal. The neo-Gothic building replaced a Romanesque church that had been demolished two years earlier.
  • A wash house ( lavoir ) is located just outside the village and also dates from the 19th century.
