Archignat ( Occitan Archinhat ) is a place and out of this, several hamlets (hamlets) existing and farmsteads French community with 336 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Allier in the north-west of the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes , near the border between the historic provinces of Berry and Bourbonnais .

location

The place Archignat is about 16 kilometers (driving distance) west of Montluçon on a hill above the river Magieure at an altitude of about 365 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate and is influenced equally by the Atlantic and the mountains of the Massif Central ; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; cattle breeding and a little viticulture were also carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers settled in the village. Agriculture still plays a dominant role in the municipality's economic life. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The region around Montluçon played a role in French history as early as Roman and Frankish times . Around the year 1000 the region was united with the Bourbonnais. A simple parish church was built in the 13th century . In 1802 the now abandoned hamlet of Frontenat and the surrounding farms were combined with Archignat.

  • The parish church of Saint-Pardoux et Saint-Sulpice was built from rubble stone in the 13th century , but later plastered and thoroughly redesigned in the 19th century. The nave is spanned by a vaulted wooden ceiling; the neo-Gothic apse , on the other hand, shows a ribbed vault painted in the trompe l'oeil style and a real tracery window . The bell tower above the facade is a work of the 19th century.

Surroundings

  • A stone wayside cross with an octagonal shaft (Croix des Âges) was built around 1500 and is located about one kilometer northwest of the district of the same name. It was classified as a Monument historique in 1969 .
  • The Romanesque chapel of Saint-Pardoux in the hamlet of Frontenat , located about five kilometers to the southwest, has a two-part bell gable . The nave and the flat apse are also covered by a vaulted wooden ceiling. The church, which was sold during the French Revolution and is still privately owned, has been classified as a monument historique since 1970 .
  • On the nearby parcel of Jarges-Frontenat there are larger stone slabs that are seen as the remains of dolmen . Urns were also discovered.
