Christopher Newton (born September 29, 1973 ) is a retired British cyclist .

Career as an active athlete

Chris Newton drove on the road for the Linda McCartney Racing Team in 1999 and won the British championship in the individual time trial . Two years later, he won a stage at the Circuit de Lorraine and was also able to win the overall standings. In 2002 he won three stages at An Post Rás , which he won the following year. From 2005 until the end of his playing career in 2010, Newton drove for the British Continental Team Recycling.co.uk .

Chris Newton is more successful on the track than on the road . He won his first silver medal at the 2000 UCI Track World Championships in the team pursuit . Later, at the Olympic Games in Sydney , the British National Team secured the bronze medal. Until the next games he was with the national team in the team pursuit two times second and once third in rail world championships. He also won the world championship title in the points race in 2002 from Franz Stocher . In Athens he was not part of the squad. At the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne , he won the gold medal in the team pursuit. Newton drove these successes with Bradley Wiggins , Paul Manning , Steve Cummings , Rob Hayles and Bryan Steel, among others . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he won the bronze medal in the points race.

Chris Newton has been a trainer for the British cycling association British Cycling since 2012 .
