← European Champion Clubs' Cup 1962/63 |
The European Cup of National Champions 1963/64 was the 9th edition of the competition. 31 club teams took part, including 30 national champions from the previous season and the defending champions with AC Milan .
The participants played in a pure cup mode with (except for the finals) back and forth games for the crown of European club football. In the event of a tie, there was a playoff in a neutral place. With the exception of AC Milan, all clubs started in the preliminary round.
The final took place on May 27, 1964 in the Prater Stadium in Vienna in front of 72,000 spectators. Inter Milan won the cup for the first time with 3-1 against Real Madrid . Joint top scorer were Vladimir (Vladica) Kovačević (FK Partizan Belgrade), Sandro Mazzola (Inter Milan) and Ferenc Puskás (Real Madrid) with seven goals each.
With Borussia Dortmund , which reached the semi-finals, a German champion determined in the league mode took part for the last time; until 1974 (victory by FC Bayern Munich ) no German team got that far.
Preliminary round
The first legs took place from September 10 to 25, and the second legs from September 25 to October 9, 1963.
