Levi Casey (politician)

Levi Casey (born around 1752 in Province of South Carolina , † February 3, 1807 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1807 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Both the exact date and place of birth of Levi Casey are unknown. He grew up during the British colonial era and then joined the American Revolution. During the War of Independence he served in the Continental Army . He later became a brigadier general in the South Carolina State Militia. In 1785 Casey became a district judge in Newberry County .

Politically, Casey became a member of Thomas Jefferson's Democratic Republican Party . In the years 1781 and 1782 and again from 1800 to 1802 he sat in the Senate of South Carolina . In between he was a member of the State House of Representatives from 1786 to 1799 . In 1802 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of South Carolina, where he succeeded Thomas Moore on March 4, 1803 . Since he was confirmed in the following elections, he could remain in Congress until his death in 1807 . During this time the Louisiana Purchase made by President Jefferson and the passage of the 12th Amendment to the Constitution fell .

Casey was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in 1806. He was unable to take up his new term of office, which began on March 4, 1807, because he died on February 3 of this year. After a by-election, his mandate fell to Joseph Calhoun . Levi Casey was buried in the Washington Convention Cemetery.
