List of Members of the Vienna State Parliament and Members of the Vienna City Council (16th electoral term)
This list of MPs to the Vienna Landtag and members of the Vienna City Council (16th electoral term) lists all MPs to the Vienna Landtag and City Council in the 16th electoral term. The state parliament and the local council were constituted on November 29, 1996. After the state elections in 1996 , 43 of the 100 seats were held by the SPÖ , 29 by the FPÖ , 15 by the ÖVP , 7 by the Greens and 6 by the Liberal Forum (LIF). After the swearing in of its members, the state parliament and municipal council elected the members of the state government and the city senate Häupl II .
After Rüdiger Stix was expelled from the FPÖ in May 1998, he founded the Free Democratic Union (FDU) with other former FPÖ MPs who had spoken out against Jörg Haider's “Democracy Treaty”.
Functions
Landtag President
Maria Hampl-Fuchs (ÖVP) took over the office of 1st President of the State Parliament in the constituent session of the State Parliament , although the ÖVP only took third place in the election. Hilmar Kabas (FPÖ) was elected 2nd President of the Landtag, and Erika Stubenvoll (SPÖ) was elected 3rd President . Hampl-Fuchs was elected with 87 of 99 votes, Hilmar Kabas received 43 votes, and Erika Stubenvoll received 64 votes.
Chairman of the municipal council
At the suggestion of the SPÖ and ÖVP, the number of chairmen was set at four people, but the limit to three people demanded by the FPÖ, the Greens and the LIF did not find a majority. In the previous period, the council had six chairmen. In the constituent meeting, the SPÖ member Rudolf Hundstorfer , who had held this office since 1995, was subsequently elected 1st chairman of the municipal council . The office of 2nd chairman was taken over by Johann Römer (FPÖ), 3rd chairwoman was the previous 2nd chairwoman Ilse Forster . Franz Karl (ÖVP), who has been the 4th chairman since 1995, was re-elected to this position in the constituent meeting.
On June 22, 1998, Heidemarie Unterreiner replaced her party colleague Johann Römmer as 2nd chairman.
