geography
Melay is located around 55 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Chaumont in the southeast of the Haute-Marne department.
history
The area was populated early on. This is proven by the discovery of stones with paintings. In the 12th century the parish is mentioned in a dispute between the Lords of Borbonne and the Abbey of Vaux-La-Douce. In 1304 the community was handed over to the Count of Bar by the French king. The parish shares the history of the Duchy of Bar . It is devastated in the Thirty Years War. The mechanization of agriculture led to heavy emigration in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Melay was part of the Bailliage de la Marche within the Barrois mouvant region . The place belonged from 1793 to 1801 to the District Bourbonne. In addition to the canton of Voisey from 1793 to 1801 and to the canton of Bourbonne-les-Bains since 1801 .
