Events
Johann Sebastian Bach
- Johann Sebastian Bach works in Weimar as court organist and chamber musician at the court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst .
- January 19 : Bach's church cantata Mein Gott, how long, oh long? (BWV 155) has its world premiere in the castle church of Weimar. The cantata text comes from the Weimar court poet Salomon Franck .
- January 24th : On the occasion of the wedding of his employer Ernst August in Nienburg , Bach first met his brother-in-law, the young Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen , who was to become his new employer in 1717.
- December 13th : Bach's church cantata Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht (BWV 186a) is performed for the first time in Weimar.
- During his tenure in Weimar from 1712 to 1717, Johann Sebastian Bach composed a collection of chorale- related organ pieces ( choral preludes ), known as the Orgelbüchlein (BWV 599–644).
- Due to his excellent reputation as an organ appraiser, Bach is called in to appraise the organs in Halle ( Cuntzius organ of the Liebfrauenkirche) and in Erfurt ( Augustinian church) .
georg Friedrich Handel
- George Frideric Handel has lived in London since October 1712 and has lived with the Earl of Burlington since 1713 .
- Handel follows King George I briefly back on German soil, where he also visits his relatives in Halle and made a detour to Ansbach . Here Handel meets his fellow student Johann Christoph Schmidt (1683–1763) from his student days in Halle. He went to London with him and was his secretary, accountant and musical assistant until his death.
Alessandro Scarlatti
- Alessandro Scarlatti works as Kapellmeister of the Cappella Reale in Naples .
- Scarlatti's opera Carlo re d'Allemagna based on the libretto by Francesco Silvani will be premiered in Naples.
Domenico Scarlatti
- Domenico Scarlatti has worked in Rome since 1709 with the exiled Polish Queen Maria Casimira Sobieska , who lives in Palazzo Zuccari , for whose private stage he has composed six operas, as well as at least one cantata and one oratorio over the years .
- Since 1713 Scarlatti has also been maestro di capella at the Capella Giulia of the Vatican .
Georg Philipp Telemann
- Georg Philipp Telemann is the city's music director and bandmaster of the Barfüßer and Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt am Main . Telemann also takes over the organization of the weekly concerts and various administrative tasks of making exchange Company to Frauenstein in the house Braunfels on the Liebfrauenberg where he also lives.
- During his time in Frankfurt Telemann composed, in addition to the cantatas, oratorios , orchestral and chamber music , much of which is published, as well as music for political ceremonies and wedding serenades. However, he does not find the opportunity to publish operas, although he continues to write for the Leipzig Opera.
- On a trip to Gotha , Duke Friedrich offered Telemann a position as Kapellmeister. The Duke not only promised him that he would continue to work as Kapellmeister for the Eisenach court, but also got the Duke of Saxe-Weimar to promise Telemann another position as Kapellmeister. This would make Telemann, so to speak, chief conductor of all the Saxon-Thuringian courts. A letter to the Frankfurt council in which Telemann politely issues an ultimatum regarding his salary proves his diplomatic skill. He stays in Frankfurt and enforces a wage increase of 100 guilders . Together with his income from the Frauenstein Society and fees for occasional compositions, Telemann's annual income is 1,600 guilders, making him one of the best-paid in Frankfurt.
Antonio Vivaldi
- Antonio Vivaldi becomes musical director (maestro de 'concerti) of the Orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà (one of four homes in Venice for orphan girls). The orchestra soon acquired a reputation that was legendary for the time and attracted numerous travelers to Italy.
- November: Vivaldi's oratorio Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarie is premiered by the orchestra and choir of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. Vivaldi's only oratorio preserved today , the material of which is taken from the Book of Judith , was commissioned by the Republic of Venice to celebrate the victory against the Turks at the siege of Corfu in the same year. The libretto is by Iacopo Cassetti.
