Veľký Meder (1948 to 1990 Slovak "Čalovo"; Hungarian Nagymegyer ; German Groß-Magendorf ) is a city in southwest Slovakia .
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1268 as Villa Meger , was called Čalovo from 1948 to 1990 (after the original Slovak name of a part / river / port of the Schüttinsel from the 12th / 13th centuries) and is divided into Veľký Meder and Ižop (Hungarian Izsap ).
Veľký Meder belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . The city briefly returned to Hungary from 1938 to 1945 through the First Vienna Arbitration .
The city is strongly influenced by the Hungarian population, who make up about 85%. In 1941 there were still 522 Jews living in Nagymegyer.

- Roman Catholic church from 1460, rebuilt in 1900 in neoclassical style and consecrated to St. Nicholas
- Reformed church from 1784 in baroque style
