Canada took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 92 athletes (77 men and 15 women) in 81 competitions in 14 sports. In sport shooting with the small caliber, the nation was able to occupy two of three positions on the podium: Gerald Ouellette became Olympic champion, Gilmour Boa came third. Canada also won two medals in rowing: the four without a helmsman won gold, the eighth silver behind the USA. The art jumper Irene MacDonald also wonthe bronze medal. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the wrestler Robert Steckle .

In addition, Canada also took part in the Olympic Equestrian Games, which were held in Stockholm five months earlier . Four (male) riders entered the race, three of which won the bronze medal in eventing.
