Rock 'n' Roll Music is the third compilation album by the British group The Beatles after their breakup that includes previously released recordings. The double album was released on June 10, 1976 in Great Britain, on June 7, 1976 in the USA and in July 1976 in Germany.
Emergence
The record contract between EMI and the Beatles expired on February 6, 1976, so that EMI was entitled to publish compilation albums from this point on without obtaining the approval of the Beatles. The first to appear was the double album Rock 'n' Roll Music , which in the broader sense includes rock songs by the Beatles.
For the first time, all four songs from the EP Long Tall Sally were available in stereo on a British album : Long Tall Sally , I Call Your Name , Slow Down and Matchbox . The song I'm Down was available for the first time on an LP.
The US version of the album differed from the UK edition as George Martin remixed the following songs that were not used for the UK version of the Rock 'n' Roll Music album :
The background was that the then President of Capitol Records , Bhaskar Menon, informed George Martin that he was planning to release a compilation album of older material and asked him to review the tapes.
The Beatles gave the instruction that the original recordings must not be changed, EMI took this order literally and converted the original mono recordings into a stereo version . George Martin was dissatisfied with the sound of the stereo versions and revised the six songs listed for two days without payment. With the remaining songs, the vocals were more centered due to the mix. EMI in Great Britain followed the instructions of the Beatles and waived the George Martin mixes.
In the United States, rock 'n' roll music reached # 2 on the Billboard 200 (# 1 was Wings' album Wings at the Speed of Sound ) and went platinum in June 1976 for one million units sold ( 1 ⁄ 2 Million double albums sold). The US single Got to Get You into My Life became the Beatles' 27th single to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The album reached number ten in Germany and number 11 in the UK.
Republication
On October 27, 1980, the double album Rock 'n' Roll Music was released as two single albums with the titles Rock 'n' Roll Music Volume 1 and Rock 'n' Roll Music Volume 2 with a completely new cover design. Front cover photo was taken by Leslie Bryce on February 7, 1964. The new mixes by George Martin were generally used for the re-release. The album Rock 'n' Roll Music has not yet been legally released on CD . Both single albums were awarded platinum in the USA in January 1997.
Cover design
The cover was designed by Roy Kohara, the drawings by Ignacio Gomez. John Lennon did not agree with the cover design and offered to design a cover himself, this offer was rejected by EMI .
