San Cassiano is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1993 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The municipality is located about 36 kilometers south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento . San Cassiano belongs to the Unione dei Comuni delle Terre di Mezzo .
history
When the Saracens destroyed the city of Muro Leccese in 1033, the settlement of San Cassiano was created. In the place of the refuge, however, there was already a holy place in the 9th and 10th centuries.
The municipality was established in 1975 after having long been part of today's neighboring municipalities of Botrugno and Nociglia .
