The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the 13th time in 1987/88 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the thirteenth staging as the second highest football -Spielklasse the gentlemen in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1987/88 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 44 game days. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship won the team from Hamilton Academical , which also secured participation in the Premier Division season 1988/89 . FC East Fife and FC Dumbarton had to relegate to the Second Division . Gordon Dalziel of the Raith Rovers was the top scorer with 25 goals .
