Sultan's Trail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sultans Trail is a long-distance hiking trail and leads over a length of about 2,400 km from Vienna to Istanbul , through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.

Historical background

The name "Sultan's Trail" is dedicated to Sultan Suleyman I 'the Magnificent', ruler of the Ottoman Empire . Under his leadership, the Ottoman troops conquered Belgrade and most of Hungary and briefly besieged Vienna . Today's route follows the route described by Sultan Süleyman on his way. It started from Istanbul on May 10, 1529 and reached Vienna on September 23 after 141 days. It was the most difficult expedition to the west. A second attempt in 1532 also failed. In 1566, at the age of 60, he led his troops for the last time; he died near Szigetvár in Hungary.

concept

In contrast to its past, the Sultans Trail is now supposed to be a path in the sign of peace and international understanding . He starts on the Kahlenberg where by a battle the second Siege of Vienna came to an end. It ends at the sultan's tomb in Istanbul ( Suleymaniye Mosque ).

The Sultans Trail is developed by the NGO Sultans Trail International in the Netherlands. After the experience with the Spanish Way of St. James in 2009, which was overcrowded by pilgrims , the idea arose to create a new cultural-historical long-distance hiking trail that connects the west with the east and invites different cultures to meet. In 2010 the first inspection of the entire route from Vienna to Istanbul took place.

Since nobody knows the exact historical route of Süleyman, a route was worked out that connects the historical sites of the campaign with other cultural and natural sights.

Except for the section through the Bulgarian mountains, the path can be walked all year round. On most of the routes you will find a variety of accommodation options such as hotels, guest houses and private rooms. In Hungary and Bulgaria it is necessary to bring a tent.

Existing long-distance hiking trails such as the E8 and a route parallel to the Danube Cycle Path were used for the Sultans Trail . It runs through the following places:

Cultural routes in Turkey

The Sultans Trail is one of the most recently established cultural routes in Turkey. The routes were developed with the aim of making the cultural heritage of Turkey accessible to trekkers and other trail users “in passing”. The paths known as cultural routes follow old trade routes or are based on the footsteps of famous travelers. They can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. The Association of Cultural Routes in Turkey, founded in 2012, is a non-profit organization in which the founders of the routes have joined forces with local tour operators, pension operators and other partners. The aim of the association is to develop the paths in terms of sustainable tourism and to preserve the routes for future generations.

While the other routes run exclusively in Turkey, Sultan's Trail is so far the only route that goes beyond Turkey through other countries and thus wants to connect them more closely with Europe.
