Tejay van Garderen (born August 12, 1988 in Tacoma , WA , United States ) is an American cyclist .
Career
Van Garderen received his first contract with an international cycling team , Continental Team Rabobank , for which he rode in 2008 and 2009. During this time he achieved his first international elite victory on a stage of the Flèche du Sud .
He then switched to the UCI ProTeam Team Columbia-HTC and competed with the Vuelta a España in 2010, his first Grand Tour , which he was able to finish in 35th overall. After this team was dissolved, van Garderen joined the BMC Racing Team in 2012 .
At the Tour de France in 2012 and 2014 , he finished fifth overall. In 2012 he also won the junior competition . He won the overall classification of the Tour of California in 2013 . In 2014 he and his team became world champions in the team time trial .
In the following years, however, he was no longer able to build on the top positions at Grand Tours . In the 2015 season he took part in the Tour de France and Vuelta a España national tours , where he was one of the favorites. However, he had to end both races early due to illness and the consequences of a fall.
In 2017, van Garderen partly built on previous successes: At the Giro d'Italia 2017 he won a mountain stage The Vuelta a España 2017 he finished tenth in the overall ranking.
For the 2019 season, van Garderen signed a contract with EF Education First . He had to give up the Tour de France 2019 as well as the Vuelta a España 2019 due to a crash.
