Batman (original title: Batman: The Animated Series ) is an American animated television series about the DC -Comicfigur Batman . In Germany, the series was divided differently from the original publication: The original title was retained in German up to and including episode 70 and was only renamed from episode 71 to Batman & Robin . In the United States, the name changed to The Adventures of Batman & Robin with the broadcast of the first episode of the second season on September 15, 1995. From the third season, the title of the series was changed again at the start of the season on September 13, 1997. In the United States of America it has since been published under the title The New Batman Adventures , whereas in German-speaking countries it continued to appear under the title Batman & Robin .
Because of the significantly changed drawing style of the third season, it is also often viewed as a new series. However, the plot from the previous seasons is only continued again instead of reinterpreting the Batman theme. This only happened in 2004 with the series The Batman and in 1999 with the follow-up series Batman of the Future , which transfers the Batman theme 40 years into the future - regardless of all comic publications published up to that point.
Framework story
As in the comics, Bruce Wayne conspired against the crime after the tragic murder of his parents, which he had to watch as a small child and fights as a dark knight against the underworld of Gotham City . He is supported by Robin , whose parents also died before his eyes, and Batgirl , the daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon, his only ally within the Gotham City Police Department.
music
The theme music was written by Danny Elfman , as in the films , based on the title theme of the first film from 1989. Shirley Walker was hired for the music in the series itself , which later also for the animated series of the "Man of Steel", Superman , the Music wrote. It is interesting to note that she also wrote the music for the television series The Flash , for which Danny Elfman also wrote the cover story. Walker conducted Elfman's Score for the first Batman film back in 1989.
Comic
The series also came with a comic book series known as Batman Adventures . This was strongly based on the series and was the first DC series by the German Dino Verlag .
Seasons
Season 1: Batman / Batman: The Animated Series
The first season was distributed in the United States under the name Batman: The Animated Series and consisted of 65 episodes. In German-speaking countries, the program was simply broadcast under the name Batman . Batman fights alone for up to half of the season when Robin joins him. A double episode also tells how Robin came to Batman and was adopted by him.
Season 2: Batman & Robin / The Adventures of Batman & Robin
In addition to Batman, the second season also focused on Robin, who increasingly came to the fore. Accordingly, the show in the United States of America was renamed The Adventures of Batman & Robin . A corresponding renaming to Batman & Robin only took place in German-speaking countries from the 71st episode, so that only 15 of the 20 episodes of this season were published under the adapted title in Germany.
Seasons 3 and 4: Batman & Robin / The New Batman Adventures
After the end of the second season in 1995, production of the series was initially suspended for two years, until a third season from 1997 under the again changed title Batman & Robin (original title The New Batman Adventures ; sometimes also called Batman: Gotham Knights , although this title in none Manner was officially used) with 9 episodes as well as a 4th with 15 episodes based on it. Analogous to the two years since the previous season, two years have also passed within the series. The 24 episodes of this season have a different, dark style of drawing than the previous episodes. So with a few exceptions ( e.g. Harley Quinn ) the figures are redesigned and sometimes look darker and more dangerous (e.g. the scarecrow). The reason for this was the success of the Superman cartoon series , which comes from the same creators. The drawing style of that Superman series was edgier and simpler than that of the previous Batman seasons. The aim of adapting the new Batman season to this style was to benefit from the success of the Superman series and also to establish that both series play in the same series universe . Thus, crossovers were made easier by the uniformed drawing style. Due to the extensive stylistic changes and the two years with no production of new episodes, this season is sometimes viewed as a new series. However, it was released on DVD as another season of the Batman cartoon series.
action
The series continues to revolve around Batman aka Bruce Wayne, who is now portrayed more seriously and darkly. The first episode takes place about two years after the previous season of the Batman animated series.
Dick Grayson, the first Robin and Batman's longtime partner, hangs up his robin costume. The reason for this was the extremely aggressive interrogation of an involuntary helper of the Joker . Robin had followed him to his apartment. Batman also followed the crook and stormed into the apartment, where the man and his wife and son were. Batman showed no consideration for the family and wanted to know from the crook where the Joker was. Robin then leaves the place horrified. Another reason for Dick's decision was Batman's "job". Bruce didn't even find time when he graduated from college. Like Bruce, he has traveled the world and learned a lot about fighting crime. When he returned to Gotham, he assumed the identity of Nightwing. The costume is very reminiscent of Batman, especially the mask.
Tim Drake appears as the new Robin. Tim is a thief whose father left town after stealing part of a poison gas from super crook Two-Face. Two-Face found the boy, hoping he would have information about Tim's father's whereabouts. A letter and a locker key fell into Two-Face's hands and wants to kill the boy. Batman appears at the last moment and is able to save him in time. The dark knight is injured during the fight and decides to flee with the boy to the batcave via batboat. Tim discovers who is hiding behind the mask of the dark knight. When Batman and Batgirl go on a mission, the boy steals the old robin costume and can make sure at the last moment that Batman and Batgirl can defuse the poison gas bomb. Batman decides to give the boy a chance and trains him.
Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon, who now has a bigger role than the old series, was Dick Grayson's girlfriend.
useful information
- In an episode of Batman of the Future ( "Eternal Youth" ) you can see a picture that shows Bruce and Barbara as a couple.
- In the movie Batman of the Future - The Joker Comes Back you see Tim Drake kidnapped by the Joker and made into his son. He also reveals some secrets about Batman and his true identity; Batman forbids him to continue being Robin after he is rescued.
- In the episode “Old Wounds” you can find out how the original “Dynamic Duo” ended .
- In 1997, The New Batman / Superman Adventures was a collection series produced, the episodes of which were either a repetition of an episode of the first Batman seasons, the Superman cartoon series or a brand new one in the style and plot of the third / fourth Batman season and in their style held episode. Including an episode (original title: World's Finest ), which shows how Superman and Batman meet for the first time and thus officially unites their series universes . All of these new episodes were retrospectively attributed to the Batman animated series.
Movies
A total of three films emerged from the series:
- 1993: Batman and the Phantom (approx. 73 min, DEU: cinema / VHS / television, original Batman: Mask of the Phantasm: The Animated Movie )
A masked phantom kills several gang bosses in Gotham. Everyone thinks Batman is the culprit. While Batman tries to unravel the secret of this new adversary, he is suddenly confronted with his past. To make matters worse, the Joker, Batman's nemesis, reappears and takes the dark avenger seriously. It was only shortly before completion that Warner Bros. decided to bring the film to theaters because of its quality. But since this happened surprisingly and with too little advertising, success fell by the wayside. Today the film still has cult status.
- 1998: Batman & Mr. Freeze - Ice Age (approx. 62 min, DEU: VHS, orig.Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero )
Mr. Freeze's terminally ill wife Nora urgently needs a heart transplant, but the only possible candidate is Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. When she is kidnapped by Freeze, Batman and Robin come to her aid. But to save his wife, Mr. Freeze is ready to walk over dead bodies. The film did not appear until 1998, after the series was switched to a new drawing style in 1997, but was commissioned and completed much earlier. The delay is due to the real-life film Batman & Robin , which caused negative press at the time and the studio preferred to release this film later due to the same villain, Mr. Freeze.
- 2003: Batman - Riddle about Batwoman (approx. 71 min, DEU: DVD, original Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman )
As of lately, Batman and Robin aren't the only winged Avengers in Gotham City. The mysterious Batwoman arrives in Gotham and acts extremely brutally against the crime. She's especially after the penguin, who makes common cause with gangsters Rupert Thorne and Carlion Duquesne. In the USA, three crossover episodes (in the new drawing style) were also released, namely the three-part series " Batman in Metropolis " (OT "World's Finest"), the parallel series "Superman - The Animated Series" (2nd season) as a purchase video / -DVD released. In Germany these episodes were only shown individually on television.
There was also a Batman / Superman film:
- 1998 (DEU: 1999): The Batman / Superman Movie (approx. 58 min, DEU: television - individual episodes, released on DVD in the "Superman" season box 1.2)
Batman and Superman take on the fight against their greatest adversary, the crazy Joker and the cunning Lex Luthor. The film was originally produced and broadcast as a three-part episode of the Superman animated series . The episodes were only put together as a film afterwards.
synchronization

Games
Based on the television series, several video games were produced:
- 1993: Batman the Animated Series ( Gameboy )
- 1994: The Adventure of Batman and Robin ( Super Nintendo , Sega Mega Drive )
- 2001: Batman: Chaos in Gotham ( Gameboy Color )
- 2002: Batman Vengeance ( Xbox , GameCube , PS2 and Game Boy Advance )
- 2003: Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu (Xbox, GameCube, PS2 and Game Boy Advance)
Batman Vengeance, in which you set out in the role of the dark knight on the hunt for the Joker and other villains of the series, published by Ubisoft . Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu is an action game in which you as Batman , Robin , Nightwing or Batgirl were allowed to face the villain Sin Tzu, created especially for this game, in addition to some classic series opponents. The gameplay was different from Batman Vengeance , but here too the developers stayed true to the series' unique drawing style.
Offshoot
After the series, other DC superheroes were implemented as animated series that could be assembled with Batman and thus provided a coherent overall plot. This started a franchise that ran from 1995 to 2006, commonly known as the DC Animated Universe ( DCAU ). These include the following titles:
- Superman (1996-2000)
- Batman of the Future (1999-2001)
- The Zeta Project (2001)
- The Justice League (2001-2006)
- Static Shock (2000-2004)
Batman of the Future
1999 appeared the series " Batman of the Future " (original title: Batman Beyond ), which takes place about 40 years after the original series. The father of the young Terry McGuiness is murdered, while Terry himself is attacked by a gang of bikers and unexpectedly receives help from Bruce Wayne, who is now very old. So he finds out that Bruce Wayne was once Batman and now, initially against Bruce's will, takes on as Batman the fight against his father's murderers. The epilogue to the epilogue of The Justice League reveals that it was no accident that Terry becomes the new Batman.
Bruce Wayne is spoken here in the German version by the same speaker as in the Batman cartoon series, Eberhard Haar.
The League of the Just
The series The Justice League has been running in the USA since 2001 , which is based on the plot of the last Batman (& Robin) season. However, this series can be described less as an offshoot , but more as a crossover series. In fact, the series is just a cartoon version of the Justice League . The series was implemented by the same production team that produced "Batman of the Future" until 2001.
In this series, Batman and Superman team up with the superheroes Wonder Woman , Green Lantern , The Flash and Hawkgirl , as well as with the last survivor of Mars J'onn J'onzz (pronounced: "John Jones") aka Martian Manhunter , and found the “ Justice League ” (called “League of the Just” in the series), which now fights together against crime, starting from the watchtower, a geostationary space station. The series ran until May 2006 and was very popular in the USA and later in Germany.
The series has been broadcast in Germany on kabel eins since the beginning of 2005 from the third season, which was originally named “Unlimited” . The special thing about the third season is that the founding members now also gather other superheroes such as Supergirl , Green Arrow , Black Canary or The Atom to fight together against injustice in the world.
Again, Bruce Wayne in the German version is spoken by the same speaker as in the Batman cartoon series, Eberhard Haar.
