Paris-Dauphine University

The University of Paris-Dauphine ( "  Université Paris-Dauphine  ") was incorporated in 1968 as an economic and trade university. It is the only selective French university and has the status of a “Grand Établissement” (elite university). Paris-Dauphine is a state university, but it is more like a typical business school. It is characterized by a very selective selection process. In 2015/2016, of 6,700 applicants, only around 700 were retained (corresponds to around 10%). The university has campuses in London, Madrid, and Tunis.

Paris-Dauphine is a member of the Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) research institution, which also includes the École Normale Supérieure , the Mines ParisTech , the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales , the Collège de France and the national research center CNRS . Dauphine is also a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE), an association of French elite universities. Since 2009, Paris-Dauphine has been the only French university to be awarded the EQUIS label.

Around 10,000 students (as of 2012) attend their lectures on two separate university campuses , the Porte Dauphine Campus in the 16th arrondissement of western Paris in the former “ NATO Palace” and the La Défense Campus .

history

The Paris-Dauphine University was founded in 1968 as a business faculty. The main building of the university was the one that served as the headquarters of the NATO General Secretariat between 1955 and 1957. This institution became the Paris IX Dauphine University in 1970. It is a "public scientific and cultural institution" established by the so-called Faure Law of 1968. It established the dissolution of the Université de Paris into thirteen autonomous universities.

Paris-IX Dauphine and Paris-VIII Vincennes are designed as experimental universities. You need to implement the principles of the Faure Act, especially educational renewal and multidisciplinary nature. Paris-Dauphine was supposed to imitate Harvard Business School.

The founding conditions of the university shaped its unique character. It is the educational renewal of the higher education system that the Faure Act provides after the events of May 1968; and it is the availability of the former premises of the NATO General Secretariat in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. They were liberated when France withdrew from the integrated military command in 1966 and then commandeered by Edgar Faure. A former professor said at the time: “In addition to the large lecture hall, there are only small rooms…” This enables pedagogy in small groups and continuous learning for the students. Most of the teachers came from the business faculty of the Université Panthéon-Assas and its law school. They thus affirmed the independence and a new autonomy of their discipline. These guidelines are formulated in particular by Professors Alain Cotta and Pierre Tabatoni. It's about being inspired by the Anglo-Saxon “winning formulas”. Gradually, applied economics were merged with management and management informatics was combined with applied mathematics.

In 2004 the university was renamed Université de technologie en sciences des organizations et de la décision de Paris-Dauphine and awarded the status of Grand établissement . It enables her to select her students without authorization and to set the tuition fees herself. Since then, the selection of candidates has been a legal practice. Year after year the university becomes more selective.

In 2011, Paris-Dauphine will become part of the Université Paris Sciences et Lettres - Research University (PSL) along with 16 other universities. These include the École Normale Supérieure (Ulm), the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris, the Collège de France, the Classe préparatoire - branch of the Lycée Henri IV , leading art and science schools, as well as the CNRS and INSERM. In 2014 Dauphine became the only university to become a member of the Conférence des grandes écoles (CGE).

Selection process

Paris IX Dauphine University has had Grand Etablissement status since 2004 , which enables it to select applicants.

At the beginning, registration was free and there was no selection process, but the number of places was limited. So it was better for applicants to get a positive evaluation from the rector after receiving their Abitur. Later, in practice, a selection was made based on the high school graduation marks. However, the legality of this selection has been challenged by some in court. So one was served basis introduced. Once again the university returned to post- Baccalauréat (French baccalaureate) selection , albeit with a certain legal vagueness associated with its status as an experimental university. Bernard de Montmorillon, former president of the university, said: “At the beginning of the 2002 academic year, I found more than 100 complaints on my desk. There were two ways of getting into Dauphine: the selection process or the appeal to the administrative court, which we were sure we would lose… ”. This situation determined the transition to the Grand Institution in 2004, which, as already mentioned, enables it to determine a selection process.

The selection of students for the 1st Bachelor year is made on the basis of an application folder that each student submits. This includes the grades from the last two years of high school, a curriculum vitae and other relevant documents relating to the career of the Abitur graduate.

The Management and Applied Economics program (DEGEAD: Diplôme d'Etablissement de Gestion et d'Economie Appliquée de Dauphine) only recruits high school graduates from the ES (economics and social sciences) and S (natural sciences) branches, the mathematics, IT and economics program ( DEMI2E) only high school graduates from the mathematical branch of the upper school.

94.4% of those who were accepted for the first year of the DEGEAD program in June 2013 had a mention Bien or Très Bien at the Baccalauréat, i.e. a good to very good average at the Abitur. For the first DEGEAD academic year 2015/2016, 6,676 high school graduates applied, of which only 727 were accepted (10.8% admission rate). Of the 727 students, 67% had obtained the best possible qualification from the Baccalauréat.

In the case of the most popular Masters, the selection is in the order of just over 10 candidates for a place.
