Four week psalter
The division of psalms and biblical cantica in the prayer of the hours of the Roman Catholic Church is called the four-week psalter . The scheme of Vierwochenpsalters distributes the Psalms and canticles as to the individual Horen that the sequence is repeated every four weeks. A four-week schedule also exists for the other parts of the hearing ( antiphons , hymn , chapter , versicle , intercession and oration ). Only Compline has a one-week schedule; But the Compline of Sunday can also be prayed on every day.
historical development
The impetus for the reorganization was given by the Second Vatican Council in its liturgical constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium (No. 91) with the stipulation that the Psalms should “no longer be distributed over a week, but over a longer period of time.” The four-week psalter has been in effect since the reform of Liturgy of the Hours through the Apostolic Constitution Laudis canticum Pope Paul VI. from November 1, 1970, with which he put the text book Liturgia Horarum iuxta ritum Romanum ( Book of Hours ) into force. Until then, the weekly psalter had been in effect since Pope Pius V's Breviary reform of 1568 , reformed by Pope Pius X on November 1, 1911 with his reform of the Roman Breviary. All 150 psalms were prayed every week.
Content
The four-week psalter has some laws that are based on earlier traditions:
- In the lauds , an Old Testament canticle is always sung and at the end a psalm of praise is sung
- a New Testament canticle always belongs to Vespers .
- the Psalms of Compline take up the motif of the night and are characterized by trust in God
- The long Psalm 119 , which contains numerous rules of life, is prayed in sections in the daily hearers
- on Friday and Sunday the selection of psalms and cantica takes account of the Paschal mystery
- the cursing psalms 58 , 83 and 109 are left out
The Liturgy of the Hours on festivals as well as in the Advent and Christmas season , the fasting and Easter season has a different selection of texts based on the character of the day. Some - especially monastic - religious communities hold their choir prayers according to different rules, sometimes still as a one-week order.
Psalms order
Longer psalms are divided into sections (I, II, III). In the Old and New Testament Cantica usually only a selection of verses from the given chapters is prayed.
